Will the Warsteiner keep the German flag flying?

Jan-Lennard Struff’s qualification for the men’s singles at the 2025 US Open prevented a sad record from being set. Without the Warsteiner, there would have been only two German players in the men’s singles, Alexander Zverev and Daniel Altmaier – as few as in 1985 at the US Open. As a qualifier, the 35-year-old could have had a really tough draw, but he will face an opponent who has only won two singles matches in his career at the hard court Grand Slam in New York City. It is therefore certainly not out of the question that Jan-Lennard Struff will beat Mackenzie McDonald and reach the second round.

Holger Rune could then be waiting as his first opponent from the seedings. For Jan-Lennard Struff, however, it would still be a great success to reach the second round. He last achieved this at Flushing Meadows in 2020, when he even made it to the third round. In the four years since, he either failed to qualify or was knocked out in the first round. Mackenzie McDonald, meanwhile, has only made it past the first round once in the last three years, when he somewhat surprisingly defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime 3-1 in 2023, only to go on to lose 0-3 to qualifier Borna Gojo without a fight.

Neither athlete has had a particularly good season. Neither player has reached double digits in singles wins on the ATP Tour. Both currently have nine wins in 2025 and a negative record for the year. Struffi has already lost 18 matches. A closely contested match is therefore to be expected, which suggests that the audience in New York City will see a match that will not be decided in three straight sets.

It is therefore conceivable to bet on Jan-Lennard Struff against Mackenzie McDonald at odds of 1.50 at Bet-at-home that more than 3.5 sets will be played before the winner is determined.

Jan-Lennard Struff – Mackenzie McDonald Head-to-head record

The two athletes have never crossed paths on the ATP Tour and have not played any ranked singles matches against each other. This means that there is no head-to-head data available that could influence our prediction for Jan-Lennard Struff against Mackenzie McDonald.

Jan-Lennard Struff – Mackenzie McDonald Tip

Basically, we believe that Struffi, who is a long-time favorite, is capable of making it to the second round of the US Open. However, there is no value to be found in the win bet. Therefore, we should not let our wishes get the better of us, even though Mackenzie McDonald is going into this match with a very poor record. The Californian has won only two of his nine singles matches in the US Open men’s singles in his career. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old German has not exactly covered himself in glory so far in 2025, with a record of nine wins and 18 losses.

For over 0.5 tiebreaks in Jan-Lennard Struff vs. Mackenzie McDonald, the betting odds are 1.66, which we are playing with six out of ten units at NEO.bet.
