Will the Red Bulls get back on track?

While SC Freiburg beat Hamburger SV 2-1 in their first competitive game of 2026, RB Leipzig’s away game at FC St. Pauli fell victim to the onset of winter in northern Germany. The Red Bulls are now starting the new year with a slight delay and have two tough games ahead of them in the English week.

The home game against Sport-Club will be followed just three days later by a home game against leaders Bayern Munich. If RB Leipzig beat Freiburg at home, Ole Werner’s team could be well prepared for that highlight game against the record champions and shake off their recent losing streak.

RBL has lost two Bundesliga games in a row, which is as many defeats as in the first 13 games of the 2025/26 season (nine wins, two draws). The Red Bulls’ home streak has also come to an end. After six wins from their first six Bundesliga home games of the current season, their last home game before the winter break ended in a 1-3 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. It would therefore be risky to simply predict a home win for RB Leipzig against Freiburg. After all, the Sport-Club has lost only one of its last eight competitive games (five wins, two draws).

The record speaks for itself, as the Red Bulls have not lost to Freiburg in 13 competitive games (eight wins, five draws). However, despite only picking up one point out of a possible twelve in their last four away games at the Red Bull Arena, Freiburg have scored in every single one of them.

Accordingly, the tip that there will be goals on both sides again is very popular. Alternatively, with RB Leipzig against Freiburg at odds of 1.62 via the clear Betano app, you can also bet that there will be over 2.5 goals in total, which would also have been the case in five of the last seven competitive games between the two teams.

RB Leipzig – Statistics & current form

Since their promotion to the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig have had something of a subscription to international competitions and have even represented the Bundesliga several times in the UEFA Champions League. However, after a disappointing seventh place in last year’s final table, the Saxons are now only competing in national competitions. But there, they are all the more successful.

Despite losing two Bundesliga games in a row, RBL are still third with 29 points and even have a game in hand against FC St. Pauli to close the four-point gap on Borussia Dortmund. In addition, Ole Werner’s team, which has won the DFB Cup in two of the last four years, also advanced to the quarterfinals of the cup, where they face a difficult away game at FC Bayern in mid-February.

RB Leipzig with a strong performance in front of their home crowd

With this cup game in mind, the Red Bulls want to make a statement this week, as the record champions are already visiting RB Leipzig this Saturday. This makes it all the more important for the Saxons to win at home against Freiburg, which would allow them to shake off their minor losing streak at the end of 2025 just in time for the top match.

One positive is that Yan Diomande, one of the discoveries of the first half of the season, is available again. The 19-year-old was eliminated with Ivory Coast in the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations and flew back to Leipzig by private jet on Sunday, so he should be an option again on Wednesday evening. It could also depend on the Ivorian whether RBL can continue its previous performance at the Red Bull Arena. With 18 out of a possible 21 points from its first seven Bundesliga home games, the Saxons are one of the strongest teams at home in the top flight of German soccer.

Freiburg – Statistics & current form

SC Freiburg came close to qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last season, but had to settle for the Europa League, where they are currently on course for a direct ticket to the round of 16. After six games in the EL league phase, the Black Forest team is still unbeaten (four wins, two draws) and sits in fifth place with only three goals conceded.

Things have been significantly worse, but still solid, in the Bundesliga, where they have already recorded 23 points after 16 matchdays. If they manage to win away at the Red Bull Arena, which is not too realistic according to the odds offered by the best betting providers for RB Leipzig vs. Freiburg, they could potentially reduce the gap to a Champions League spot to six points.

Freiburg travels to RB Leipzig in good form

The Breisgauers’ form has been on the up recently. The Black Forest side have lost only one of their last eight competitive games (five wins, two draws), turning around their home game against Hamburger SV at the start of the year and collecting valuable points with a 2-1 home win. They have picked up seven out of a possible nine points in their last three league games.

Julian Schuster’s team therefore has no reason to hide at the Red Bull Arena, even though RBL has usually been a difficult place for Freiburg to play. The Baden-Württemberg side has now gone 13 competitive games without a win against the Saxons (five draws, eight defeats). However, the Sport-Club is always good for goals out of nowhere, thanks in large part to Vincenzo Grifo’s strong set pieces, which could once again make the difference. At the very least, we believe the players from Breisgau are capable of scoring an away goal.

RB Leipzig – Freiburg Head-to-head record

Head to head: 12 – 6 – 4

The two teams have met 22 times so far, with RB Leipzig leading the head-to-head record very clearly with twelve wins. Not only did the Red Bulls beat SC Freiburg in the final of the DFB Cup (on penalties) in the summer of 2022, but they are also unbeaten in 13 competitive games against the Black Forest team (eight wins, five draws). The Saxons also won their last home game at the Red Bull Arena 3-1.

RB Leipzig – Freiburg Tip

Basically, our prediction for RB Leipzig against Freiburg is a home win for the Saxons, who have won six of their seven Bundesliga home games in the 2025/26 season. However, RBL have recently suffered two defeats in a row, including a 1-3 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in their last competitive game of the old year.

The visitors from Breisgau certainly don’t stand a chance, especially since the Sport-Club has lost only one of its last eight competitive games (five wins, two draws) and, unlike the Red Bulls, has already had a successful start to 2026, defeating HSV 2-1 on Saturday. The three-way system is therefore risky, and we would strongly advise against it for this match.

The statistics speak for themselves. The Black Forest team, who have scored in each of their last four away games at the Red Bull Arena and are particularly adept at scoring from set pieces, are definitely capable of scoring at least one away goal. We therefore find the best value in betting on both teams to score.
