Will the Sky Blues fail once again against their nemesis?

Groundhog Day, all those involved in the draw must have thought. For the fifth year in a row, this pairing has come up in the knockout stages of the Champions League, with the record Champions League winners from Spain coming out on top in four of the five cases, including the last two years. The only time the Sky Blues eliminated the Blancos, they went on to win the title. The top bookmakers are giving Real Madrid against Manchester City much higher odds that the Citizens will make it to the quarterfinals.

Whether Pep Guardiola’s team, who, incidentally, is about to play his 190th Champions League game as a coach, tying Alex Ferguson in the all-time rankings (only Carlo Ancelotti has more with 218 games), is a contender for the trophy is still open to question. If they manage to advance against their nemesis, they could face Bayern in the quarterfinals, defending champions PSG in the semifinals, and Arsenal—currently the top favorite in the 2026 Champions League winner prediction—in the final. So it’s a long way to overall victory, although in our opinion, the prediction that the Sky Blues will knock out the Blancos in Real Madrid vs. Manchester City is definitely not a foregone conclusion.

Rather, the aura of Real Madrid should not be underestimated. Especially at their home stadium, the Bernabéu, there has not been a single game in 39 Champions League knockout rounds since 2011 (0-2 against FC Barcelona, then still coached by Guardiola) in which the Royals have not scored. That’s a total of 86 goals and an average of 2.2 goals in home games – mind you, not in preliminary round games, where landslide victories against underdogs artificially inflate the average.

Against this backdrop, it is very interesting to bet on a high-scoring first leg, in which we believe that the Merengues can prevent a home defeat. We recommend betting on over 1.5 goals in the second half, for which Bet-at-home is offering odds of 1.78 for Real Madrid vs. Manchester City.

Real Madrid vs. Manchester City Prediction AI

AI agrees with us overall that the record Champions League winners should not be underestimated, as the AI prediction for Real Madrid vs. Manchester City is for a double chance 1X. Betano is offering odds of 1.80 for this, which implies a probability of 55.6 percent.

AI, in turn, gives Los Blancos a 63.2 percent chance of either winning at home or at least holding on to a draw. This is significantly higher, which is why AI believes that double chance 1X offers one of the best values in the entire Champions League round of 16.

Real Madrid – Statistics & current form

Real Madrid is still at a crossroads. Although results have been lacking at times, only the Copa del Rey is irrevocably lost so far, with an embarrassing defeat to second-division side Albacete. They are four points behind FC Barcelona in La Liga.

However, Los Blancos are not only measured by their performance in the national championship, but above all in the Champions League, where they squandered a top-eight finish after a 2-4 defeat at Benfica Lisbon. With two wins against Los Encarnados, Los Merengues have now made it to the round of 16 after all. If Real Madrid beat Manchester City, the Champions League record winners, who have knocked the Sky Blues out of the knockout stages in four out of five cases, would certainly bring a little more calm to the environment.

Real Madrid and the anxious hope for Kylian Mbappé

The problem, however, is that Kylian Mbappé is currently unavailable due to a knee injury. The Frenchman’s importance is demonstrated by the fact that he has not only scored seven goals against Manchester City in the Champions League, but has also been involved in no fewer than 71 Champions League goals since the start of the 2019/20 season. This puts him ahead of names such as Robert Lewandowski (63) and Erling Haaland (61). In 2025/26, he scored 54 percent of all Madrid’s Champions League goals (13 out of 24).

It is currently unclear whether Mbappé will be able to play after his knee problems. The fact is, however, that the White Ballet is also very accurate overall in Champions League knockout rounds on home turf. Since April 2011, Real has scored in 39 consecutive home games in the CL knockout phase, scoring a total of 86 goals, which corresponds to an average of 2.2 goals per game.

Manchester City – Statistics & current form

Manchester City’s last five years in the UEFA Champions League can be summed up quickly: either the Sky Blues won the trophy (2023) or they were knocked out by Real Madrid in the knockout stages (2011, 2022, 2024 and 2025). In the current season, they have already faced Los Blancos in the group stage, celebrating a 2-1 away win in December. If the Premier League club can repeat this result, it would of course be a fantastic starting position for the return leg next Tuesday.

Guardiola’s team’s dress rehearsal was certainly promising. The Citizens won 3-1 at Newcastle United in the FA Cup on Saturday. In the Premier League, however, they are now seven points behind league leaders Arsenal after their recent 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest. It is striking that in both games, they once again failed to keep a clean sheet.

Will Erling Haaland make his mark on the game?

Nevertheless, the bookmakers are now unanimously tipping the Sky Blues as favorites, which is certainly due to the fact that there are no question marks whatsoever surrounding Erling Haaland. The Norwegian is as certain to be in the starting lineup at the Bernabéu on Wednesday evening as night follows day. The superstar was responsible for seven of the Citizens’ 15 Champions League goals in the 2025/26 season (47 percent – the second-highest rate behind Mbappé with 54 percent).

Furthermore, no team in the current season has scored as many goals from build-up play as the Sky Blues (six), so it would be quite conceivable to bet on a Haaland goal at the Bernabéu.

Real Madrid – Manchester City Head-to-head record

Head to head: 5 – 5 – 5

The two teams have now played 15 international competitive matches against each other, and the record could hardly be more balanced, with five wins each and five draws. However, when it comes to who has the upper hand in knockout rounds, the Blancos clearly have the edge. Real Madrid has eliminated Manchester City four times in the knockout stages of the Champions League, including in the last two seasons in a row (quarterfinals in 2023/24 and playoffs in 2024/25).

Real Madrid – Manchester City Tip

Whether or not a home win for the record Champions League winners is a viable prediction for Real Madrid vs. Manchester City depends to a large extent on whether and how long Kylian Mbappé will be able to play after his recent knee problems. If the goal scorer is missing in the first leg, it would be a serious setback for the Blancos.

This uncertainty is another reason why the three-way system is a little too vague for us. However, even if Mbappé is unavailable, we cannot share the bookmakers’ assessment that the Sky Blues are clear favorites at the Bernabéu, even though the Citizens already recorded a 2-1 away win at the Royal’s on December 10, 2025, in the league phase.

In any case, we expect it to be another heated encounter between the two teams, who are now facing each other in the Champions League knockout stages for the fifth year in a row. In their last eleven meetings, there have been at least three goals ten times – and in most cases, significantly more. Accordingly, the odds are high for another high-scoring duel.
