Will the DFB squad gain confidence?

The 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is fast approaching. The first matches are just two and a half months away: Germany faces debutant Curacao, while the Swiss kick off their tournament with a must-win match against Qatar. To ensure they are fully prepared and gather valuable insights, the neighboring nations have agreed to a friendly match on Friday evening at St. Jakob Park in Basel.

Although both the Swiss national team and the German squad will certainly want to boost their confidence with a good result just a few weeks before the World Cup kicks off, the friendly nature of the match naturally makes it incredibly difficult to predict the outcome of Switzerland vs. Germany.

A look at past results nevertheless provides some clues for making a prediction ahead of the Switzerland vs. Germany match. The teams are certainly not lacking in form. The Swiss, for example, have won seven of their last ten international matches and last lost in November 2024—narrowly, 2-3, in the Nations League against European champions Spain.

The DFB squad, meanwhile, boasts five straight wins with a combined score of 16-1. Nevertheless, it must be noted that Friday night’s challenge against the 18th-ranked team in the FIFA World Rankings and 2024 European Championship quarterfinalists will be far more difficult.

Nevertheless, it is safe to assume that the national team coach will not deviate from his fundamentally offensive approach and will want to see his team play bold soccer in Basel as well. Against teams of similar quality, such as France, Portugal, Italy, or the Netherlands, this very approach has, however, consistently resulted in conceding goals in the recent past, which is why I am primarily recommending the odds on both teams scoring in the match between Switzerland and Germany.

While a 1X2 bet in a friendly match naturally carries a risk—since it’s only partially clear an hour before kickoff which players will start—I still believe the Germans have a realistic chance of winning. If the 2014 World Champions bring their full potential to the field, Nagelsmann’s squad—which likely boasts even stronger quality at the top—will undoubtedly leave the pitch as winners.

For those who don’t want to take that risk, there are exciting odds of 1.65 on Over 2.5 goals for the Switzerland vs. Germany match. In their last four home games, the Swiss have scored at least three goals each time; in six of their last eight home matches, both teams have also found the net. Germany has averaged 3.25 goals in their last five matches.

Switzerland – Germany Head-to-Head Record

The Germans have a relatively clear edge in the head-to-head record. 36 of the 54 total meetings have gone to the men from the Federal Republic. If we narrow the timeframe to the past 22 matches, Switzerland has managed just a single victory (1-5-16).

However, the national teams have drawn three times in a row recently. On the other hand, the DFB squad has won six of their last eight away games in Switzerland. Also interesting: In the last four matches since 2012, both teams have scored in every game; a total of 18 goals were scored—an average of more than four per match.

Switzerland – Germany Prediction

It all kicks off with the neighborhood rivalry against the Swiss on Friday evening at St. Jakob Park in Basel. The Swiss national team is in top form and highly ambitious, having proven its quality at the last European Championship in 2024 and not having lost an international match since the fall of 2024. The DFB squad struggled with significant issues following the European Championship two years ago, although their recent performances in World Cup qualifying—particularly the 6-0 win over Slovakia—have sparked hope for a successful World Cup in North America.

My preferred Switzerland vs. Germany prediction is therefore that both teams will score at least once during the match.
