Will Santander squander its strong position?
There are still ten matchdays left in the Spanish second division before it is decided which two clubs will secure direct promotion to La Liga. Currently, Racing Santander still has the best position of all the clubs. The Green-Whites lead the standings, but have recently shown surprising signs of weakness. At home against Albacete (11th), they suffered a 0-4 thrashing, and away at Real Zaragoza, a 0-2 defeat. After four consecutive wins, these two losses came as a complete surprise.
It will now be exciting to see whether the “Racinguistas” have learned the right lessons and can get back on track on Wednesday evening. Ahead of Racing Santander’s home game against Gijón, the bet on a home win certainly comes with lower odds, partly because the visitors from a coastal region in the north of the country currently occupy only tenth place in the standings.
Currently five points behind sixth place—which, after 42 matchdays, would at least be enough to qualify for the playoffs—the Red-Whites are also in desperate need of points. The only problem is that the former first-division side has won just one of its last seven league matches and has recently shown major weaknesses, especially on the road. Their last away win was two and a half months ago and was also their only three points on the road so far in 2026. As a result, Gijon sits in 16th place in the away table.
Since the North Spaniards have also lost their last two away games in a row and, looking back at their past four away matches, have accumulated a total of just one point and scored a single goal, I’m predicting ahead of the Racing Santander vs. Gijon match that Coach Borja Jimenez’s team will not win in Cantabria.
Alternatively, one option is to combine the aforementioned Double Chance 1X with Under 1.5 goals in the first half. Gijón has scored only 18 goals in 32 first halves this season, the majority of them in front of their home fans. Overall, the Over 1.5 mark was surpassed after 45 minutes in only 25 percent of all Sporting matches; away from home, this figure drops to just 20 percent.
Racing Santander – Gijon Head-to-Head Record
Since 2022, the clubs have faced each other regularly in Spain’s second division. Add to that a match in the Copa del Rey, bringing the total to eleven encounters over the past three and a half years. Racing Santander won seven of those eleven matches.
Gijon came out on top twice, while only one match ended in a draw. At home, Santander has won five of their last six matches (one draw) and has been undefeated since 2020. Anyone who believes in a fourth straight home win can take advantage of betting odds of 2.10 on Racing Santander vs. Gijon at Interwetten.

Racing Santander – Gijon Prediction
In La Liga 2, surprises are practically the order of the day. The mere fact that, after 32 matches played, league leaders Racing Santander are only 13 points ahead of tenth-place Sporting Gijon underscores quite clearly just how tight the competition is in Spain’s second division. Nevertheless, I’m optimistic that the favorites won’t lose at home on Wednesday night. The head-to-head record favors the Green-Whites, as does the visitors’ poor away form—they haven’t won on the road since January 17.
It’s also clear, however, that both teams have struggled to score goals recently. League leaders Santander have lost twice without scoring a goal, while Gijon have managed just one goal in their last four away games. My preferred approach is therefore to place a combined bet on Racing Santander and Gijon for 1X & Under 1.5 (1st half).
