Will the ‘Gunners’’ slump continue?

The Champions League quarterfinals are here, and we’ve got a prediction for you on the match between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal! In the previous round, the Portuguese side knocked surprise package Bodø/Glimt out of the competition after a fantastic comeback in the second leg.

Now they face the “Gunners,” once again the top team from the group stage, and the British side are among the hottest contenders in the Champions League winner odds. In the last round of 16, the Londoners also deservedly prevailed against Leverkusen.

Sporting is now banking on home-field advantage in the first leg. This was evident not only in their recent 5-0 victory over the Norwegians but also during the previous group stage.

In that phase, the hosts won all four home games, defeating, among others, the title-winning PSG. Against this backdrop, we’re predicting that the home team won’t lose in the match between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal.

Sporting Lisbon vs. Arsenal AI Prediction

AI has also analyzed the Portugal-England matchup and is sounding a value alert when looking at the odds for a home win—including an Asian handicap of +0.75 for the hosts.

This selection is based on our AI estimating the expected goals difference between the two teams at 0.66 in favor of the visitors.

Sporting Lisbon – Stats & Current Form

As mentioned, Sporting performs very successfully in front of their home crowd, primarily due to convincing offensive performances. Coach Rui Borges’s team scored five goals (including extra time) in their last Champions League home match against Bodø/Glimt, and in the four home matches during the group stage of the competition, the players from Estádio José Alvalade XXI scored eleven goals.

Luis Suárez has been particularly prolific for the reigning national champions. The Colombian has five goals after ten matches in the current edition of the competition and is also performing exceptionally well in the domestic Portuguese league.

In the national league, he leads the scoring charts with 24 goals. He will also be well-rested for the match against Arsenal, as he was suspended for last weekend’s league match.

Will Suárez strike again for Sporting?

Given this and his tremendous efficiency in front of the opponent’s goal, the odds on his next personal goal celebration are equally attractive in the showdown between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal.

Should Suárez score again, he would tie Viktor Gyökeres’ current club record for most goals in a single European season (2024/25 season). The Green-and-Whites’ offensive strength from a collective perspective is also evident in their domestic league matches.

No other team scores more goals in front of their own fans than the 1964 European Cup Winners’ Cup champions. Furthermore, the hosts have lost only one of their 13 home games in the Portuguese league this season (11-1-1), and that defeat was more than seven months ago!

Arsenal – Stats & Current Form

While the Portuguese are banking on home advantage, Arsenal is relying on its away dominance. Since early December of last year and a loss at Aston Villa, Arsenal has lost only one other away competitive match. However, the visitors’ morale could still use a boost.

The reason is that their dream of a quadruple recently came to an end with a loss in the EFL Cup final. They suffered a 0-2 defeat against Manchester City, further extending their record for the most final losses in the competition (7).

The FA Cup is also over for Arsenal

Then came another setback in the dress rehearsal for the match in Lisbon. In the FA Cup quarterfinals last weekend, the “Gunners” lost in Southampton. A particularly painful defeat, as the “Saints” play only in the Championship.

Arsenal’s title chances have also diminished further. The Londoners’ trip to the Portuguese capital is a special match for the aforementioned Swede Viktor Gyökeres. The forward played for their upcoming opponent until last season, and did so with tremendous success.

Last season, he scored 39 league goals for Sporting and played a key role in Lisbon’s championship victory with that tally. Gyökeres is already making an impact again at Arsenal. This is clearly evident from his 11 goals in the current Premier League season.

Although the tally is lower compared to the nearly 40 goals he scored last season, this is naturally due to the fact that the English top flight is at a significantly higher level than the Portuguese league. His class was also on full display in the Swedish national team jersey last week.

In the two World Cup playoff matches for the Swedish national team against Sweden and Poland, Gyökeres scored no fewer than four goals. On top of that, he netted the decisive winner in the playoff final against Poland, securing Sweden’s ticket to the World Cup.

Will Gyökeres score for Arsenal against his former teammates?

Given his current strong form and his extra motivation against his former teammates, the betting odds for another goal by Gyökeres are particularly attractive in the match between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal.

The visitors are also relying on their strong defense: Arsenal has the lowest averages per game in the Champions League this season for goals conceded (0.5), expected goals conceded (0.75), and opponent shots on goal (2.7).

Sporting Lisbon – Arsenal Head-to-Head Record

The 21-time Portuguese champions and Arsenal last faced each other in November 2024 during the group stage of the Champions League on Matchday 5, with Sporting suffering a 1-5 home defeat. The English side thus successfully avenged their previous elimination in the Round of 16 of the Europa League in the 2022/23 season via a penalty shootout.

However, in regular time, Sporting has never beaten Arsenal in seven meetings (0-4-3). In contrast, Arsenal is still waiting for its first away win against a Portuguese opponent in the knockout stages of a European competition (0-4-2).

Most recently, they suffered a 0-1 defeat in Porto in the Round of 16 of the 2023/24 Champions League. Regardless, the odds for the upcoming match between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal point toward a victory for the English side.

Sporting Lisbon – Arsenal Prediction

Although Arsenal confidently booked their spot in the quarterfinals in the aggregate of their two most recent Champions League matches against Leverkusen, their advancement was primarily secured thanks to a strong home performance against the Werkself. In contrast, they only managed a draw in the first leg at the BayArena. Now, with Lisbon, they face another team that is strong at home.

Sporting has won all five of its home matches in the current Champions League campaign and has been particularly impressive offensively in those games, scoring 16 goals. We therefore do not consider the hosts to be without a chance and are predicting a home win or a draw in the match between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal.

This is further supported by the fact that the visitors are arriving on the back of two recent defeats in domestic cup competitions. The two missed title opportunities have weakened the confidence of Arteta’s squad, and the two goals conceded in each match have shown that the previously very stable defense is currently looking shaky.
