Can TSG get back on track?

Just a few weeks ago, FC Augsburg and TSG Hoffenheim were among the hottest teams in the Bundesliga. Both clubs came out of the winter break in near-perfect form, racking up points left and right and springing surprise after surprise. Recently, however, these teams’ form has been on a downward trend.

FCA has gone four games in a row without a win and must continue to fight to avoid relegation. TSG has lost three of its last five league matches and has managed to secure just one point from its most recent three games. As a result, it’s anything but easy to predict the outcome of the direct clash between Augsburg and Hoffenheim.

For an away win in Augsburg, odds of 2.20 are being offered for Hoffenheim. This assessment is surprising given that the home side, under Manuel Baum, is usually very difficult to beat at home. Furthermore, Hoffenheim has conceded 14 goals in their last four Bundesliga away games.

After two lackluster performances at home against VfB Stuttgart and at Hamburger SV—where they nearly lost despite having a man advantage—the Augsburg side will certainly want to show a different side of themselves to kick off Matchday 29 in the Bundesliga. I could imagine this working against Ilzer’s charges, who have recently appeared very vulnerable and unfocused.

Augsburg vs. Hoffenheim AI Prediction

The AI expects a closely contested match. This is underscored by the nearly identical xG values and the similar win probabilities. For example, the AI has calculated a 36.5% probability of an FC Augsburg home win. This corresponds to fair odds of 2.74. However, since Betano is offering a generous 3.45 on a win for the Fuggerstadt team, the Augsburg vs. Hoffenheim AI prediction, based on value criteria, clearly favors a home victory!

Augsburg – Statistics & Current Form

FC Augsburg has recently been unable to build on its strong start to the 2026 calendar year. After previously securing five wins from six matches, including a sensational away victory at the Allianz Arena against FC Bayern, the Fuggerstadt side has now gone four games in a row without a win.

They suffered defeats in Leipzig, in Dortmund, and at home against VfB Stuttgart. Last week’s away match at Hamburger SV ended in a 1-1 draw. Despite this dip in form, FCA still sits in a strong eighth place in the separate second-half table. In the overall standings, they are in eleventh place. They hold a relatively comfortable seven-point lead over 16th place.

Augsburg relies on home strength

Particularly noteworthy is their consistency in front of their home crowd. Augsburg has suffered just a single defeat in their last nine Bundesliga home games. On average, the South Swabians have earned more points at home this season than either HSV or Union Berlin. Given this, I believe the odds for an away win are set far too low ahead of Augsburg’s evening match against Hoffenheim. I definitely think FCA can pick up a point and therefore recommend the double chance 1X.

Despite the absence of captain Keven Schlotterbeck, who is forced to watch from the sidelines due to his fifth yellow card, with a bit of risk-taking, one could even consider the DNB 1. Here, Bwin offers 2.35 as the top odds on the two-way market.

Hoffenheim – Stats & Current Form

For a long time, it looked as though Christian Ilzer could lead TSG Hoffenheim straight from the Bundesliga relegation battle to the UEFA Champions League. Currently, however, the Sinsheim-based side is among the teams in the worst form in the top flight. They have managed to win just one of their last six league matches. Two draws and three losses—two of them recently at home against Mainz and at RB Leipzig—round out their below-average record.

Looking back at the past six matches, only Cologne, Heidenheim, and Wolfsburg have earned fewer points than the Kraichgauers (five). Sitting fifth in the table, TSG is just one point ahead of the sixth-place team, though they are also only three points behind the top four. With six matchdays remaining, anything is still possible for the Blue-Whites.

Has TSG Hoffenheim bitten off more than they can chew?

Still, one can’t shake the feeling that the surprise team is slowly running out of steam. No wonder, since throughout the entire season, Hoffenheim has been the league’s most active team in terms of running, completing the most high-intensity runs and the most sprints. No other team committed more fouls than Ilzer’s squad. Will the Austrian head coach’s players now have to pay the price for this highly intense style of play?

It will be crucial on Friday for the fifth-place team to finally show more defensive stability again. As mentioned earlier, national team goalkeeper Oliver Baumann has conceded a total of 14 goals in the last four Bundesliga away games. However, since the offense hasn’t been performing as well lately either—with the Sinsheim-based side scoring at most once in four of their previous five league matches—my inclination for the Augsburg vs. Hoffenheim prediction leans toward Under 3.5.

Augsburg – Hoffenheim Head-to-Head Record

TSG Hoffenheim has celebrated more Bundesliga wins against FC Augsburg (16) than against any other club. However, the Blue-Whites have struggled in Augsburg recently. Including the DFB Cup, FCA has not lost any of its last four home games against its upcoming opponent (2-2-0).
For the first time ever in their Bundesliga history, the Fuggerstadt side could now go four Bundesliga home games against Hoffenheim without a loss. However, things will have to go differently than in the first leg, which the Kraichgauers won very convincingly 3-0. I consider it very unlikely, however, that TSG will score three or even more goals at the WWK Arena.

Augsburg – Hoffenheim Prediction

TSG Hoffenheim last won a Friday match in the Bundesliga in December 2023. Since then, the Blue-Whites have made eight attempts but have consistently failed to secure three points (0-5-3). In contrast, FCA has won its only Friday match under Manuel Baum to date. The same goes for the two Friday matches against their upcoming opponent in 2019 and 2023. For this rematch, I also predict that the home team will secure at least one point.

FCA has lost only one of its last nine home games. Hoffenheim, on the other hand, has suffered three defeats in its last four matches. Defensively in particular, the fifth-place team, which is currently out of form, has not made a particularly good impression. I am therefore going with the Augsburg vs. Hoffenheim double chance bet 1X.
