Will the Bundesliga side take the lead at home?
VfL Wolfsburg and SC Paderborn had to fight for their place in the relegation playoffs right up until the final matchday. While the Lower Saxony side ultimately earned a well-deserved win at FC St. Pauli to secure 16th place in the top flight, the East Westphalians moved past Hannover 96 into third place thanks to their away win in Darmstadt. Both teams are therefore heading into the two most important matches of the season with positive momentum. Meanwhile, bookmakers with German licenses are convinced of the Wolves’ status as favorites. This is underscored by the lower odds for the Wolfsburg vs. Paderborn match in favor of coach Dieter Hecking’s squad.
The advantages for VfL are primarily attributed to the disparity in individual quality and experience. To put it in context: In central midfield, for example, there will be a direct duel between Christian Eriksen—who has experienced it all in his career, played in the Champions League, and represented his home country of Denmark at World and European Championships—and Santiago Castaneda, who was still under contract in the Regionalliga West just two years ago. Such matchups add extra excitement, but in my view, they also increase the likelihood that a prediction favoring the higher-division team will pay off for the first leg between Wolfsburg and Paderborn.
Apart from that, history also speaks relatively clearly in favor of the Autoklub. Since the reintroduction of the relegation/promotion playoff in 2008/09, the first-division team has prevailed over the second-division team in 13 out of 16 (!) cases after the two-leg series. In the past 13 years alone, the lower-division club has only managed to prevail once, in 2019 with Union Berlin. At that time, however, it was only due to the away goals rule, which has since been abolished.
Ahead of the two upcoming decisive matches for the final spot in the upcoming Bundesliga season, the Wolfsburg vs. Paderborn odds definitely suggest that the bookmakers believe VfL will be in the top flight in 2026/27.
Wolfsburg – Stats & Current Form
Dieter Hecking is certainly one of the most conservative coaches in the Bundesliga. On the one hand, of course, because of his background as a police officer, but on the other hand also because of the stoic calm that the experienced coach exudes even during the most hectic phases of the game. Quite obviously, however, the star-studded squad from the “Autostadt” needed exactly that mix of a firm hand and an aura—sometimes age-related—to finally get going. At least to some extent, because even Hecking couldn’t prevent VfL from ultimately finishing 18th in the second-half standings since taking office. They managed to secure just eleven points from their 17 matches in the second half of the season.
Wolfsburg has gone over four months without a home win
Nevertheless, the Wolves—who had been toothless for so long—were there exactly when it mattered:
In the final game of the season at Millerntor, which the Lower Saxons won 3-1 to secure 16th place. It was only their third win of the 2026 calendar year, the second under Coach Hecking. Nevertheless, with regard to the Wolfsburg vs. Paderborn prediction, it must be noted that the former German champions have not won at home since January 14. They have lost six of their last seven Bundesliga home games.
Nevertheless, I recommend betting on a home win for the relegation playoff match. The Lower Saxony side has plenty of weapons, especially on offense. It’s no coincidence that no other team in the bottom half of the table has scored more goals than VfL. Added to this is the mental factor of suddenly working toward a positive goal again rather than fighting against a negative scenario. All of these are aspects that lead me—despite the absence of the suspended Vini Souza—to back the home win in the betting odds between Wolfsburg and Paderborn.
Paderborn – Stats & Current Form
With a strong record of 18 wins, eight draws, and eight losses, SC Paderborn has truly earned its chance at promotion to the Bundesliga. Five years after its last relegation from Germany’s top flight, the desire for first-division soccer is palpable. And this despite the fact that at one point it even looked as though the Blue-Blacks might squander their strong position in the home stretch.
After going ten league games without a loss (6-4-0), coach Ralf Kettemann’s team lost two of four matches on matchdays 30 through 33 and failed to win the other two as well. Dennis Seimen conceded eleven goals in those four matches. Ironically, however, they finally kept a clean sheet in the season finale in Darmstadt. SCP won 2-0 at the Lilies and benefited from Nuremberg’s help in Hannover.
Games involving SCP are usually high-scoring
But because the significant difference in quality makes it too risky for me to bet on the guys from the Pader, my second inclination is also toward the over. In eight of the past twelve second-division matches involving SCP, the over 2.5 would have come in. In general, SC Paderborn’s matches were the highest-scoring of all the clubs that finished the 2025/26 season in the top half of the table. An average of 3.06 goals were scored.
Wolfsburg – Paderborn Head-to-Head Record
Without any inkling that, at the end of the season, EVERYTHING would be on the line against this very opponent, the clubs arranged a friendly match in early September, which SC Paderborn won 2-1. However, for reasons of timing and logic, the impressions from that match have no bearing whatsoever on the upcoming first leg at the Volkswagen Arena. The most recent encounters during the 2019/20 Bundesliga season can also be safely disregarded at this point. On Thursday evening and in the return leg on Monday, other factors will be decisive!

Wolfsburg – Paderborn Prediction
Who can handle the pressure better, or rather, who feels more pressure ahead of the decisive two relegation matches for the final spot in the 2026/27 Bundesliga? Intuitively, I would answer both questions with “Wolfsburg.” Logically, the top-flight side with its high-caliber squad is the favorite. On the one hand, due to history, which automatically puts the higher-division team ahead in this relegation series. On the other hand, however, also because of the greater wealth of experience—both on the field and on the bench.
Although VfL has been waiting for a home win for over four months and SCP has certainly impressed on the road throughout the season, I’m betting on the favorite to win in the match between Wolfsburg and Paderborn.
