Who will become the first American champion in Halle?
For a brief moment, spectators in East Westphalia certainly hoped that Sunday’s final at the OWL Arena might be an all-German affair. However, after Alexander Zverev narrowly lost 1-2 to Taylor Fritz, Daniel Altmaier’s dream of reaching the final also quickly faded. No matter which Taylor Fritz vs. Frances Tiafoe prediction comes true in the final, it’s already clear that the tennis tournament, which has been held in Germany since 1993, will be won by an American for the first time. For Taylor Fritz, it would be his sixth singles title on grass; for Frances Tiafoe, it would be his second, following his tournament victory in Stuttgart in 2023.
Speaking of Stuttgart: Just a week ago, Taylor Fritz narrowly lost the grand final there 1–2. That, too, was an all-American final on German soil. A bad omen? Not if you look at their head-to-head record. The world No. 9 has won all seven of his most recent singles matches against Big Foe, which is why our prediction for Taylor Fritz vs. Frances Tiafoe leans more toward Taylor Fritz, who has now racked up seven wins in eight singles matches during the short grass-court season and most recently defeated the newly crowned French Open champion Alexander Zverev once again.
However, Taylor Fritz expended a tremendous amount of energy in the semifinal, a match that lasted nearly three hours—especially given that the heat wave currently sweeping through Germany also took a toll. Frances Tiafoe, on the other hand, had an easy time of it against Daniel Altmaier in a quick 2-0 victory that lasted just 74 minutes. Since that could now be a factor in the final, we see the greatest value in betting that the match will be decided in two sets.
Taylor Fritz – Frances Tiafoe Head-to-Head Record
Head-to-Head: 7:1
The two Americans have faced each other eight times so far, and the resulting record is very one-sided. After Frances Tiafoe managed to win their very first match against Taylor Fritz in the opening round of the 2016 Indian Wells Masters, the subsequent seven encounters all went to Taylor Fritz without exception; he also defeated “Big Foe” 3–2 in their most recent match to date, the semifinals of the 2024 US Open.
Taylor Fritz – Frances Tiafoe Prediction
On grass, Taylor Fritz is undoubtedly one of the ATP Tour’s most exceptional players. The 28-year-old could celebrate his sixth tournament victory on this surface in Halle.
While that wouldn’t put him on par with legends like Roger Federer (19), Pete Sampras (10), or Andy Murray (8), it would definitely elevate him to the ranks of the tournament favorites just before Wimbledon—in a grass-court season where he has already won seven of eight singles matches.
It’s true that Frances Tiafoe has also claimed a title on grass and knocked the No. 2 seed, Félix Auger-Aliassime, out of the tournament in the quarterfinals in Halle. However, Big Foe has lost all seven of his most recent singles matches against his compatriot.
And yet, one factor could be that Frances Tiafoe spent only 74 minutes on the court in the semifinals and advanced to the final with plenty of energy to spare, while Taylor Fritz left it all on the court against Alexander Zverev. To cover as many possibilities as possible in the final, we therefore recommend betting that the match will be decided in two sets, which also covers the scenario where Big Foe takes the lead and his compatriot no longer has the energy needed for a comeback.
