Will Norway cement its status as a dark horse?

Even before their commanding World Cup opener, the Norwegian national soccer team had been on many experts’ lists of dark horses for the 2026 World Cup. This early praise is set to be further confirmed on Monday—ideally with a successful Norway vs. Senegal bet on Erling Haaland and Co. However, what must be taken into account for the prediction ahead of Norway’s match against Senegal is the fact that they’re facing a far stronger opponent than on the first matchday.

The fact is that the momentum definitely lies with the team ranked 31st in the world. Their 4-1 opening victory has generated a great deal of confidence, as has their qualification, which they secured ahead of Italy! If the Scandinavians continue to ride this wave, there’s every reason to believe they’ll secure another victory on Monday.

However, the opponent—who won the Africa Cup of Nations on the field but has (as of now) had to relinquish the title on a technicality—should not be underestimated. Despite the expected loss to World Cup favorite France, the Teranga Lions held their own for much of the match and were able to land dangerous counterattacks time and again. Nevertheless, a different kind of pressure now weighs on the physically strong Africans, who would be on the brink of elimination in the group stage in the event of a second loss.

Norway vs. Senegal AI Prediction

The AI is having a hard time naming a favorite. The xG values—1.38 vs. 1.18 in favor of the Norwegians—are very close, and the calculated probabilities also point to an exciting match. According to the AI, however, a Norwegian victory has only a 41.9% probability of occurring, so the Norway vs. Senegal AI prediction is based on the Double Chance X2 market and, given the xG total, is combined with the Under 3.5 market.

Norway – Statistics & Current Form

After 28 years without a World Cup appearance, Ståle Solbakken’s team celebrated a convincing 4-1 victory over Iraq in their opener, immediately making a statement in Group I. Superstar Erling Haaland, in particular, was in top form for his World Cup debut and scored two goals. Speaking of Haaland: If the City striker finds the back of the net again on Monday, the best odds of 2.00 are available at Bwin for a Norwegian or Senegalese goal.

How will Norway fare against a strong opponent?

The decisive victory reflects the currently excellent mood in the Norwegian camp, which has been going strong for months. Part of the reason for the euphoria was their strong qualifying campaign. Norway marched through the qualifiers with a perfect record, winning all eight matches and qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1998. The long dry spell without a major tournament seems to be giving the team additional motivation rather than putting pressure on them. The performance in the match against Iraq also suggests this.

Despite the lopsided score, however, it must be noted that the defense looked vulnerable at times and the flow of the game was nowhere near as one-sided as the final result suggested. Nevertheless, I don’t believe the “Lions” have shown their best performance yet. With players like Nusa, Odegaard, Haaland, and Sörloth, much more seems possible. Given the great opportunity to secure a spot in the knockout round early and earn a showdown with France for the group title, I think it’s realistic that Norway will also pick up three points against Senegal.

Senegal – Statistics & Current Form

Senegal’s World Cup opener did not go as planned. They suffered a 1–3 loss to group favorites France; while the “Lions of Teranga” put up a spirited fight for long stretches, they were unable to mask the quality gap between themselves and the top European team in the decisive moments. Nevertheless, there was no prevailing sense of pessimism after the match. Instead, it was emphasized that the performance was encouraging at times and that the crucial matches against Norway and Iraq will now determine whether they advance.

Will Senegal’s offense be its downfall?

Even during World Cup qualifying, Senegal established itself as one of Africa’s strongest teams. The squad qualified with ease, benefiting from its physical presence, defensive stability, and team unity. While there is a lack of individual world-class talent on offense compared to previous years, the team still boasts a wealth of international experience and numerous professionals from top European leagues.

I’d still like to revisit the issue of the lack of world-class talent in the attack. Sadio Mané is getting on in years and is no longer performing at his absolute peak in club soccer; Nicolas Jackson saw little playing time last season as a replacement for Kane; and right winger Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old from Paris Saint-Germain, is more of a prospect for the future.

Norway – Senegal Head-to-Head Record

Almost exactly 20 years ago, the national teams faced off in a friendly match that ended 2–1 in favor of Senegal.

For the upcoming match, however, the results from two decades ago—when none of the players from today’s rosters were on the field—are completely irrelevant. The head-to-head record therefore has no bearing on Monday’s Norway vs. Senegal prediction!

Norway – Senegal Pick

I see Norway as the slight favorite in this matchup. Their convincing 4-1 opening win against Iraq, their perfect World Cup qualifying campaign, and the currently excellent team morale all point in the Scandinavians’ favor. Even though the defense didn’t always look rock-solid against Iraq, I expect another improvement in performance. Especially given that the pressure is on the West Africans, who are under pressure to perform after their loss to France.

Anyone expecting a high-scoring match might be in for a surprise. I think caution will prevail. Norway would likely not be entirely dissatisfied with a draw, while the “Teranga Lions” absolutely must avoid a loss. Nevertheless, the odds are in favor of the Norwegians, who have the momentum on their side. I therefore recommend betting on Norway vs. Senegal in favor of a win for Erling Haaland and Co. I’m placing a bet at 2.18 with Betano, using three notional units as my stake.
