Will CR7 bounce back?

The second matchday in Group K is coming up, and we’ve got a prediction for you on the match between Portugal and Uzbekistan! The 2016 European champions kicked off the tournament with a disappointing 1-1 draw against underdog DR Congo.

The “Seleção das Quinas” is, of course, the favorite going into the match against the Uzbek team. Uzbekistan is making its World Cup debut, but we consider the underdog to be, at the very least, a comparatively strong World Cup newcomer.

Compared to the three other newcomers—such as Curaçao and Cape Verde—we believe the Central Asian team has significantly more quality in its squad, and this is especially true for the offense. Among others, the current co-top scorer of the Turkish Süper Lig is part of that offense!

Portugal vs. Uzbekistan AI Prediction

AI has simulated the match thousands of times, and the use of semiconductors was not in vain: Our artificial intelligence expects no more than 2.89 goals in this match.

Portugal – Statistics & Current Form

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to expand his collection of records: With six World Cup appearances under his belt, he now tops this ranking as well. However, he has to share the record with his “best buddy” Lionel Messi and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Now, though, he’s determined to score at least one more goal in a World Cup, as that would bring his total to nine World Cup goals—tying him with another national legend, Eusebio, for the most goals in World Cup finals. On top of that, he already holds another scoring record: he’s the only player to have scored in five World Cups.

Will Ronaldo strike again against Uzbekistan?

Given this situation, we expect CR7 to be particularly motivated, and we also see value in the betting odds for a goal by Ronaldo in the showdown between Portugal and Uzbekistan.

Bruno Fernandes was also in top form heading into the World Cup. He had a very strong season with his club, Manchester United. Fernandes was in a class of his own, especially as a playmaker: the 31-year-old set up 21 goals for his teammates—a clear lead over France’s Cherki, who had a dozen assists! At the same time, it was a new Premier League season record.

Martínez’s Last Chance at the 2026 World Cup

Coach Roberto Martínez also knows how to navigate a successful World Cup. In 2018, as head coach of the Belgian national team, he led the “Red Devils” to their greatest success to date with a third-place finish at the tournament in Russia.

With Portugal as well, he has already achieved major success since taking the helm, winning the Nations League in 2025. On the other hand, the Spaniard recently stated that he will let his contract expire after the World Cup.

The World Cup therefore now represents his last chance to win another title with Portugal. However, he may remain the coach of CR7 and João Félix, as rumors point toward Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia as his next coaching destination, where both stars are currently under contract as well.

Uzbekistan – Statistics & Current Form

Abbosbek Fayzullayev made Uzbek history in the 1-3 loss to Colombia: His goal was Uzbekistan’s first ever in a World Cup finals! From an objective standpoint, the loss was deserved, but this World Cup debut nevertheless showed that the Uzbeks are in the finals for a reason, and we also consider them the top newcomer for the 2026 World Cup.

Until shortly before the end of the match, the Central Asians were trailing by just one goal, and their fighting spirit was impressive. On top of that, Uzbekistan has Fabio Cannavaro—a former World Player of the Year who has already won a World Cup with Italy—on the sidelines. The top defender will thus help his players on the field, above all, with a wealth of experience at this level.

Shomurodov is expected to lead the Uzbek attack

Eldor Shomurodov is yet another example of why we believe the Uzbeks have players of international caliber. Last season, the forward stormed through the Turkish top flight while playing for Istanbul Başakşehir and, alongside Nigerian Paul Onuachu, claimed nothing less than the Süper Lig scoring title.

Given this track record, we expect the 30-year-old to deliver strong performances at the World Cup as well, and with players like goal-scorer Abbosbek Fayzullayev—who scored against Colombia—the attack is otherwise well-staffed.

Will both Portugal and Uzbekistan find the back of the net again?

With this in mind, we see sufficient value in the odds for both teams to score in the match between Portugal and Uzbekistan.

As a former defender, Coach Cannavaro will certainly be particularly pleased to have strong players at his disposal in the backfield. In particular, 22-year-old center back Abdukodir Khusanov is performing at the highest level.

At the beginning of last year, he became the first player from his country to move from Lens to the English Premier League. The professional from Tashkent didn’t end up at a second-tier club, but rather at a top-tier team: Manchester City. Despite the fierce competition within Manchester City’s star-studded squad, Khusanov managed to establish himself and was recently a regular in former coach Pep Guardiola’s backline.

Portugal – Uzbekistan Head-to-Head Record

This is the first-ever matchup between the two teams, and it will take place at NRG Stadium in Houston. The venue holds 72,000 spectators, and a particularly welcome feature for the players—especially important these days—is the roof, which keeps the Texas heat at bay. For this debut match between Portugal and Uzbekistan, the odds now favor the Southern Europeans.

Portugal vs. Uzbekistan Prediction

The “Tugas” are looking to do better in this tournament than they did four years ago, when they lost to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

The Portuguese squad is once again very strong.

However, their opening match ended in a draw against the DR Congo. Now they face Uzbekistan, another clearly weaker opponent, but in our view, Cannavaro’s squad possesses at least as much quality as their last opponent.

On top of that, they already showed in their tournament opener against Colombia that they didn’t come here just to be cannon fodder for the other teams in the group. Given that, we think the best bet for the match between Portugal and Uzbekistan is that the Central Asian team won’t lose by a margin of two or more goals.
