Will the Silberberger effect carry over into the season opener?

For much of last season, it looked as though Wolfsberger AC would have to sweat it out until the final matchday to avoid relegation. It wasn’t until the hiring of Thomas Silberberger that the success—which had nearly led the team to the championship the season before—returned to the Lavant Valley. In their last seven league matches, WAC earned an impressive 14 points, winning all four of their final games and ultimately missing out on a spot in the national Conference League final by the narrowest of margins. In the match between Wolfsberg and Austria Vienna, a prediction that the home team will earn at least a point is therefore by no means far-fetched, even though the Carinthians had to cope with some painful departures over the summer.

The key will be whether Coach Silberberger can help his players maintain this positive momentum and bring his distinctive style to the field in the new season as well. If they succeed, WAC is likely to prove an extremely tough opponent even for the ambitious Viennese.

Meanwhile, there is cautious optimism at the Verteilerkreis. Finishing fourth in the standings last season was a step in the right direction, which is why Stephan Helm has become only the fifth Austria coach since the early 1980s to enter a third season with the “Veilchen.” At the same time, the storied club has once again had to endure a significant exodus of players.

While the transfers of Barry, Aleksa, and Ndukwe injected several million euros into the club’s strained coffers, on the field, the many young talents will first have to fill the gaps left behind. It seems almost inevitable that this will lead to fluctuations in performance. That’s exactly why, when it comes to the Wolfsberg vs. Austria Vienna prediction, I’m leaning toward the Double Chance 1X bet—especially since, as is well known, FAK struggles with the dual burden right at the start of the season.

To make matters worse, the Violets have managed to score more than one goal in only one of their last nine league matches. Last season, Wolfsberger AC won both matches against Austria, 2–1 at home and even 2–0 in the capital. It’s worth noting, however, that those were also the only two WAC victories in their past seven competitive matches against the Violets. The goal statistics are at least as striking: In 17 of the last 19 head-to-head matches, a bet on under 3.5 goals would have paid off; in most cases, there were even no more than two goals scored. That’s exactly why it makes perfect sense to take a closer look at the betting odds for a low-scoring match ahead of the Wolfsberg vs. Austria Vienna game.

To kick off the new Bundesliga season in Austria, two teams are facing off that numerous experts expect to finish in similar positions in the final standings. Those looking to take a slightly bolder approach will also find an interesting value bet in a WAC home win at odds of around 2.35. Given the defensive nature of their head-to-head record and the fact that both teams will be looking to get off to a solid start in the new league season, I expect a close match with few goals, in which the Carinthians will at least take home a point from the Lavant Valley.
