St. Pauli Needs to Learn How to Win Again

After two years in the Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli faces an unfamiliar challenge in a sense. The Kiezkickers need to relearn how to win; after all, they managed only 14 wins out of 68 league matches combined over the past two seasons. At the same time, however, their relegation has also shifted expectations. Instead of entering each match as underdogs week after week, St. Pauli is now among the teams expected to fight for direct promotion.

Especially for the season opener against SpVgg Greuther Fürth, a lot points in Hamburg’s favor on paper. It’s no coincidence that, ahead of the St. Pauli vs. Fürth matchup, the odds for a home win on the 1X2 market are significantly lower than those for a victory by the visitors.

In the match between St. Pauli and Fürth, my prediction therefore clearly favors a successful home opener for the Hamburg side.

It’s also relatively difficult to assess SpVgg Greuther Fürth ahead of the season opener. Although the Franconians managed to stay up via the relegation playoffs, they had to cope with some painful departures over the summer. With Hrgota, Futkeu, Dietz, and Ziereis, several key players left the club and are now set to be replaced primarily by younger players with development potential. While the team’s playing style is unlikely to change much, given the major roster shakeup, it seems rather unrealistic to expect them to quickly recapture the success of Fürth’s past years.

My top pick for the St. Pauli vs. Fürth match therefore remains a home win. Given the differing objectives and the higher individual quality, I consider the 1.90 odds at Bwin to be absolutely worth a bet. Those who prefer a slightly lower risk will find a sensible alternative in the match combination 1X & Under 4.5 goals (1.52). Also intriguing is the 2.30 odds on Martijn Kaars to score, as the Dutchman has already demonstrated his strong form during preseason and should benefit from the new offensive system.
