While 1. FC Köln kicked off the season by sending Europa League participant Hoffenheim home with a 3–2 loss, VfB Stuttgart was routed 1–5 by reigning double champions Bayern. In the new season’s early—and not very meaningful—standings, the Swabians are currently at the bottom of the table. However, it’s very likely that in the VfB Stuttgart vs. Cologne match, the bet on the Champions League participant earning a point will pay off, meaning they shouldn’t remain at the bottom of the table for long.

With just 32 points, the promoted team’s survival this summer was certainly not a convincing one, especially since the “Goats” barely scraped by in the end. The team from Cologne managed to win just one of their last 14 league games (six draws, seven losses). They even finished the season with just one point out of a possible twelve from their final four matches.
However, René Wagner’s players shook off that losing streak right on the first matchday of the new season. Following their 2-1 cup victory at third-division side Würzburg, the Effzeh followed up with a 3-2 home win against TSG Hoffenheim—a result that was well-deserved given their 18 shots on goal and an expected goals (xG) value of 1.95.
Will Cologne get their away form under control?
Nevertheless, the odds for the VfB Stuttgart vs. Cologne match clearly favor Stuttgart and suggest another win for the home team. The reason for Cologne’s status as a heavy underdog is their lackluster performance on the road last season. No other Bundesliga team won fewer away games (just two), and only the two relegated teams, Heidenheim and St. Pauli, picked up fewer points on the road (nine each) than the “Goats” (13). Nevertheless, Cologne still has to prove that their victory over TSG—who, incidentally, also scored two goals against the “Goats”—wasn’t just a fluke.

However, at least recently, the balance has shifted in Stuttgart’s favor; they are currently unbeaten in their last seven Bundesliga matches against the “Effzeh” (five wins, two draws) and also managed to secure all six points against the “Geißböcke” in the 2025–26 season.
