Mourinho Faces His Past
There are Champions League matches that feel like knockout-round games even on the first matchday. Our Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan prediction is one of them. Two former European Cup champions, two clubs with big names, two teams with unfinished business in this competition. And right in the middle of it all: José Mourinho.
Sixteen years after his Champions League triumph with Inter, the Portuguese coach is embarking on a new European mission in our Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan prediction. Back then, he led the Nerazzurri to the treble. Today, he’s tasked with bringing Madrid back to the top. For Los Blancos, it’s about their 16th title in the Champions League, but it’s also about more than just a number.
But back to this match. After two years without a major title, the Madrid club has spent a lot of money, revamped the roster, and brought back the coach who once divided, electrified, and shaped the Bernabéu.
The coaching situation for the visitors has drawn less attention. Cristian Chivu led the Milanese to the domestic double last season. For the first time since the 2009–10 Mourinho season, the Nerazzurri won both Serie A and the Coppa Italia. But their recent European campaign left a bitter aftertaste.
After final defeats, disappointments, and the surprising elimination against Bodø/Glimt, the Italian representative is also looking for proof that this team can succeed beyond the national stage. The opener at the Santiago Bernabéu is therefore more than just a prestige match. It’s an early litmus test for two teams that have started strongly but haven’t yet dispelled all doubts.
Those familiar with the in-depth statistics will recognize the advantages on the hosts’ side. Even during their most recent loss to Betis Sevilla (0–1), the way Mourinho’s squad played actually pointed toward a victory.
Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan AI Prediction
An open slugfest or a cautious tactical battle? Anything is possible in this top-tier matchup. Both teams can score goals, but the Nerazzurri’s defense is also impressive. Nevertheless, Real is considered the favorite at home; the AI also predicts a 62.8 percent probability of a Real Madrid victory (odds: 1.59), which is on par with the odds at Interwetten (1.65).
Real Madrid – Statistics & Current Form
Jose Mourinho began his second stint with Real Madrid with three league wins. A 2-1 victory at Espanyol, a 4-1 win against Real Sociedad, and a 4-0 win against Málaga quickly gave the impression that the fresh start might be taking hold. Kylian Mbappé scored, Jude Bellingham dominated, Vinicius Júnior provided highlights, and the new squad seemed more versatile than the previous season.
Then came the 0–1 loss at Real Betis. On paper, it wasn’t a collapse. Madrid had plenty of possession, took many shots, and created enough chances not only to equalize but to win the game. The statistics showed the “White Ballet” from Madrid with 3.55 expected goals and 19 shots—six of them on target.
Nevertheless, the score remained 0–1. Mbappé missed a penalty late in the game, and Carlos Espi scored a spectacular overhead kick but was offside during the build-up. It is precisely this match that makes the Champions League opener more interesting. Real can press opponents, create chances, and open up a game almost at any moment with their offensive quality.
Absences must be compensated for
Across the first four competitive matches, Mourinho’s team has put up strong numbers: 10 goals, 12.66 xG, and an average of 19.5 shots (8 on target). The Portuguese coach has consistently opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation. Without relying on extreme possession, the Royals looked like a very mature, territorial attacking machine in the first games of the season.
Among other things, the expected goal difference is impressive. On average, Real recorded 3.17 expected goals. In all four matches, the offense performed at a respectable level, averaging 2.77 xG. The defense is geared more toward controlling space than toward maximum dominance through high pressing (13.33 PPDA). So far, this has been a functional approach that has shifted 50 percent of opposing teams’ shots to outside the penalty area.
On average, the Royals’ opponents have recorded fewer than one expected goal per match (0.92 xGA). Their consistency in this area is also impressive. No team has recorded more than 1.11 expected goals against the top Spanish team this season. This stands in contrast to the Nerazzurri, as we’ll see shortly. The absences could prove critical. Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler, and Bernardo Silva are suspended. Aurelien Tchouameni is injured. As a result, Bellingham could start deeper alongside Federico Valverde.

Inter Milan – Statistics & Current Form
Cristian Chivu and his team have gotten off to a flawless start to the season. The Blue-and-Blacks have won all three of their first league matches. Their most recent match against Napoli served as a minor baptism by fire, which the reigning Italian double winners managed to win 3–2. Compared to the Royals, however, their performance hasn’t been quite as consistent.
The 4-1 win over Monza was a clear start. Or so it seems. Yet the expected goals (xG) split in that match actually favored a Monza victory (1.31:1.81 xG). Shortly afterward, Inter showed more control in their 1-0 win over Cagliari, but on Matchday 3, they found themselves in a nail-biting battle with Napoli (3-2).
Over the first three league games, Chivu’s team tallied 9.91 expected goals. Inter took a total of 67 shots and generally controlled the ball (62.9 percent possession). They also averaged 38.3 touches in the penalty area per game. That’s not just efficient, result-oriented soccer. It’s pressure that bodes well for the Real Madrid vs. Inter Milan prediction.
Under Observation
Unlike Mourinho (4-2-3-1), Chivu opts for a formation featuring a defensive back three (3-5-2). This is typical for the Italian side. However, the extra defender hasn’t provided the Nerazzurri with greater security in their competitive matches so far. The Milan defense has conceded an average of 1.58 expected goals against.
As a reminder: Real Madrid has not allowed more than 1.11 xGA in any of its four competitive matches this season. Furthermore, the quality of chances conceded is a critical factor. Although Inter’s own shots were generally high-quality (0.15 xG/shot), opposing teams were able to test their luck from better positions (0.16 xGA/shot).
Any team looking to take on Madrid’s high-quality offense should ideally have stronger defensive cover. Earlier versions of Inter would likely have been better prepared for a back-and-forth battle with Los Blancos. The current iteration of Chivu’s squad really can’t afford the sloppiness it’s shown recently.

Real Madrid – Inter Milan Head-to-Head Record
Let’s briefly bring the historical perspective into play. Real Madrid has won all four of its most recent head-to-head matches against Inter Milan—three of them by a shutout. The Nerazzurri haven’t had much to say on Spanish soil for years. The Madrid side has won all seven of its previous home games against the Milan club.
Real Madrid – Inter Milan Prediction
It remains to be seen how much control the home team will have in midfield, especially given the injuries and suspensions. The first line of pressure therefore takes on added importance. Mbappé doesn’t have to chase every ball like a classic pressing forward, but Madrid needs clear triggers.
Conversely, Real possesses perhaps the sharpest weapon in this match: speed in open spaces. Inter defends with a back three but can be vulnerable on the wings if the fullbacks don’t get back into defensive positions in time. Vinicius Junior against Inter’s right flank, Mbappé attacking the space behind the back three, and Diomande targeting isolated defenders: these are matchups that even a structurally sound Inter side cannot fully control.
Set pieces could also play a bigger role than the glamour of this matchup might suggest. In their first league games, Real averaged 7.75 corner kicks and 3.5 shots from corners. Furthermore, Inter is still waiting for a win against Madrid this millennium.
