Can the Bills break through the Texans’ defense?

The NFL season is kicking off, and if there’s one team that finally needs to make it to the Super Bowl, it’s the Buffalo Bills. After all, the Texans also have a long shot thanks to their terrific defense. They’ll need that defense this season, though, since their offense—led by CJ Stroud—was far from being a contender last season. Now Jayden Higgins has also gone down with an injury during the preseason, which hasn’t exactly improved their chances.

The Bills have been trying to fine-tune their roster to finally take that final step. To that end, they brought in players like Bradley Chubb and CJ Gardner-Johnson on defense, and DJ Moore as their new No. 1 wide receiver on offense. Here, in particular, the question arises as to whether he’s good enough to make the difference in close games.

We’ll be watching this unfold as early as Week 1, though we view the Bills as the clear favorites. Buffalo often gets off to a strong start to their seasons—last year, they opened with a 41-40 win over the Baltimore Ravens. The Texans, on the other hand, lost all three of their opening games last season. Therefore, for Texans vs. Bills, our prediction is a commanding road victory for one of the Super Bowl co-favorites.

In addition to betting on the Bills to win, the total points are also worth keeping an eye on in this matchup. The Texans have a rock-solid defense and a rather mediocre offense. In cases like this, the total points often don’t skyrocket, which makes the under bet for Texans vs. Bills a solid play—just as the under for the Texans is, though we have significantly less confidence in them.

Houston Texans – Buffalo Bills Head-to-Head Record

The head-to-head record in this matchup paints a somewhat surprising picture. Four of the last five matchups went to the Texans. However, the one game Buffalo did win was an absolute blowout, 40–0. Since the Texans’ victories were all one-score games, we expect another close game on Sunday—but this time with Buffalo coming out on top.

In addition, all five of their most recent meetings since 2018 have been low-scoring games, which could easily happen again on Sunday. We think scores like 22–17 or 20–14 in favor of the Bills are quite possible. So, for the Texans vs. Bills game, the odds on the total being under 45 points are another interesting betting option.

Houston Texans – Buffalo Bills Prediction

Last season, the Bills had a 4.5-point better offense, while the Texans had a 4.1-point better defense. Which unit can make its mark on this game will ultimately decide the outcome. And from an expert’s perspective, that’s more likely to be the Bills, who are currently playing without any major injury concerns on offense.

Therefore, for Texans vs. Bills, a bet on Buffalo -1.5 is our preferred option. However, we wouldn’t give them much more than a 3.0-point spread, as we expect a low-scoring game, which shouldn’t drive the margin of victory to dizzying heights.

For a player bet, we’re sticking with the Bills and think a TD bet on James Cook is an interesting option. He was the NFL’s rushing leader in 2025 with 1,621 yards and added 14 touchdowns to that total. Since he’s also the undisputed No. 1 in the backfield, he’ll get the most touches near the end zone.
