Which forward will make his mark on the Manchester derby?

Manchester derbies often reflect the balance of power. Our Manchester United vs. Manchester City preview, however, highlights change. The Red Devils are back in the Champions League, where they celebrated a promising return (4-0 vs. FC Sabah). For the Citizens, a season without Pep Guardiola began a few weeks ago—the first since 2015-2016.

Under Michael Carrick, the home team is still searching for consistency. City, led by Enzo Maresca, is striving to establish a new order. Both teams in our Manchester United vs. Manchester City prediction have good reasons for optimism.

On paper, the Sky Blues are heading to Old Trafford with the upper hand. The bookmakers are also expressing a subtle sense of foreboding in their Manchester United vs. Manchester City betting odds. Maresca’s squad has three Premier League wins under its belt and sits atop the standings. Added to that is a successful start to the Champions League group stage (2–0 vs. Porto).

Erling Haaland scored twice against the Dragons of Porto, and Maresca’s team displayed many of the patterns in Portugal that are expected to define this new City squad. The hosts are coming from a slightly different direction. The 4-0 victory over Sabah brought calm, goals, and the first clean sheet of the season. But their Premier League record has been mixed.

A loss to Hull (0–2), a win over Ipswich (5–2), and a 2–2 draw at Everton. Four points from three league games isn’t a false start, but it’s hardly a statement either. Criticism began to surface after the draw against the Toffees, when United squandered two leads over the course of the match. Even the slightest missteps could be punished much more severely against the Citizens.

Over the first three matchdays, the two Manchester clubs have played quite aggressively, each registering 19 shots on goal—a shared record in the English top flight.

Manchester United – Manchester City Head-to-Head Record

The record for the previous ten Manchester derbies is nearly even. The Sky Blues won five matches, the Red Devils bagged four victories, and one match ended scoreless. Unlike in the last three meetings between the two Manchester teams, we expect goals from both sides this coming weekend at Old Trafford.

With an expected goals (xG) of 7.28, the hosts rank second in the league. Just two spots behind them are the Citizens, whose chances have been worth 6.59 expected goals.

However, Maresca’s squad achieved a higher xG value per shot—meaning the Sky Blues’ average chance theoretically had a better chance of finding the net than those of Carrick’s team. This is due to a surprisingly high focus on long-range shots. Carrick’s team has taken the most shots from outside the box (28) in the league.

Manchester United plays a more direct, vertical style and likes to rely on first-time finishes. This is precisely why Benjamin Sesko’s return is so important. The forward scored two goals in 117 minutes of play—scoring once every 58.5 minutes. He restores depth to the Red Devils’ attack, provides a target man presence, and serves as a true anchor in the penalty area. However, he doesn’t solve the problem of a lack of control over the game.

For the Citizens, Erling Haaland is back in top scoring form, netting another brace against Porto. In Maresca’s system, the Norwegian often and gladly serves as the target man for crosses—with success. The Red Devils will likely be unable to stop that.
