Will the Dragons hold their ground in the cauldron of Warsaw?
In our Poland vs. Bosnia preview, two nations face off that were relegated from League A of the UEFA Nations League last season and are now aiming for immediate promotion in Group B4. It’s clear that the loser of this opening match would suffer a significant setback right off the bat. The big question, however, is what lies ahead for both nations, where the generational transition is still stalling. While the Bialo-Czerwoni (the White-and-Reds) are still led by 38-year-old Robert Lewandowski, the Zmajevi (the Dragons) are led up front by the already 40-year-old Edin Dzeko.
A problem for the Bosnians, however, is that top-tier defender Amar Dedic (Newcastle United) is sidelined due to injury. Our Poland vs. Bosnia prediction assumes that the Dragons will have difficulty closing this defensive gap in the cauldron of Warsaw, although the visitors ultimately have no choice but to approach this away game with defensive solidarity and compactness. Accordingly, we believe it’s a sound bet that the Orly will win their opening match and kick off the Nations League on a high note after missing out on the World Cup.
Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether Robert Lewandowski—who is undoubtedly far from being past his prime—can still perform at the very highest level. After all, the 38-year-old no longer has to assert himself against top international defenders in tightly scheduled competitive matches in the MLS. Even so, for the Chicago Fire, he’s only scored once every 136 minutes on average (six goals in eleven MLS appearances). As a result, he may very well find the Bosnian defense impenetrable, which is why it would make perfect sense to steer clear of the 1X2 market and bet on a low-scoring opener in Group B4.

The Bialo-Czerwoni have the deeper roster overall and the stronger individual players, especially since the Zmajevi are missing Amar Dedic, an absolute cornerstone of their defense, due to injury. Accordingly, we believe the Poles have a good chance of shaking off their brief slump of three consecutive winless international matches (one draw, two losses).
