Two Matches in One Week

After failing to register a single shot on goal in the first half against Crystal Palace, the Magpies turned it on last weekend. Buoyed by their 2-0 victory, the Toons now turn their attention to our Everton vs. Newcastle pick and are looking to build on that success.

In the last league match, Matthias Jaissle opted for a bit more experience in the starting lineup, raising the average age of the starting XI by just under two years compared to previous matches. Consequently, it’s difficult to predict the starting lineup for the Everton vs. Newcastle prediction.

The Everton–Newcastle betting odds hold special appeal because the same matchup is on the schedule again just a few days later—this time as part of the Premier League. Disappointment has recently set in among the home team. Everton lost to Arsenal (0–2) and remained winless for the third competitive match in a row.

While they managed to earn a point against Hull City (2–2), they lost the following two matches against Chelsea and Arsenal by a score of 0–2 each. These results point to a team in distress and are entirely in line with expectations.

Moyes’ team has scored only eight goals so far in the current Premier League season. Only Coventry, Sunderland, and Nottingham Forest have scored fewer (six goals each). However, Newcastle isn’t exactly shining in attack right now either.

Everton – Newcastle Head-to-Head Record

The last meeting between the two clubs was a lively back-and-forth affair. On Matchday 28 of the previous season, both teams traded goals throughout the match until Everton sealed a 3–2 victory with a goal in the 83rd minute.

We don’t expect a match of that caliber this time around. Both teams have consistently lacked clear-cut scoring chances in their competitive matches so far. The average quality of their finishing opportunities stood at 0.09 xG per shot for each team.

Everton – Newcastle Prediction

Defense is likely to be a priority for both sides. Both coaching staffs have the necessary personnel to make that happen. Newcastle often defends its own penalty area very well, allowing the fourth-fewest opponent shots inside its own penalty area as a percentage (59.42%).

Just like Everton, Newcastle rarely grants opponents in the Premier League high-quality scoring opportunities (0.10 xGA/shot). However, Lukas Hornicek is still facing too many shots overall.

Everton boasts one of the best tackle success rates in the Premier League. In addition, both defensive lines are adept at dealing with opposing shots. Newcastle has blocked the most shots (54) in the Premier League so far, while Everton has blocked the third-most (49).
