Will Effzeh benefit from an unmotivated BVB?

Niko Kovac has been in charge at Borussia Dortmund for 13 months. Nevertheless, it took until last week for BVB to lose two consecutive competitive games under his leadership for the first time. These two defeats in the UEFA Champions League at Atalanta Bergamo (1-4) and at home against FC Bayern (2-3) could hardly have been more bitter, especially as they were the sporting nail in the coffin for the Black and Yellows this season.

With ten matchdays remaining, the second-placed team now has to focus exclusively on securing its position and, at best, clinching the runner-up spot. A successful Cologne vs. Dortmund tip on an away win is definitely in the plans for the visitors’ management team!

The situation at 1. FC Cologne is currently much more explosive. After earning only one point from their last four games, the cathedral city’s team has slipped to 13th place and is now only two points ahead of the relegation zone. To make matters worse, there is unrest surrounding the Geißbockheim. For example, there is currently much debate in the media about whether Lukas Kwasniok is still the right coach for the promoted team. For this reason, among others, it would certainly be a surprise if a positive result for the Rhinelanders were to materialize on Saturday evening between Cologne and Dortmund.

Cologne vs. Dortmund Prediction AI

The betting odds offered by bookmakers coincide with the probabilities calculated by artificial intelligence, so no AI prediction immediately stands out in the three-way market for the Cologne vs. Dortmund match. What is striking, however, is that the sum of the xG values is “only” 2.90, meaning that an Asian under 3 goals can be played with confidence according to the AI. Even under 2.5 is more profitable than a bet on over 2.5 goals, given the supercomputer’s probabilities. So here, two different opinions between man and machine collide.

Cologne – Statistics & current form

For a long time, it looked as if 1. FC Cologne would be able to stay out of the relegation battle in the Bundesliga. In particular, the promising start to the season led to dreams of a place in the upper half of the table in the cathedral city. However, the reality is different, because after last Friday’s 0-2 defeat at FC Augsburg – the third defeat in the last four matches – Effzeh has fallen back to 13th place for the first time since promotion. The fear of immediate relegation is omnipresent.

1. FC Köln builds on home advantage

The record for the 2026 calendar year stands at two wins, two draws, and four losses. However, there is hope for the upcoming Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund, as the team, led by coach Lukas Kwasniok, who has recently come under fire, will be playing at home this weekend in the 25th matchday of the Bundesliga. The Billy Goats have picked up seven points from their last four home games. Since the winter break, Cologne have only lost their home games against FC Bayern (1-3) and RB Leipzig (1-2) – both times despite putting in a good performance.

It should also be noted that only the top eight teams in the table have scored more goals in front of their own fans than the cathedral city’s team. In twelve home games, a total of 40 goals were scored, which corresponds to an average of 3.33 goals per 90 minutes. In 67 percent of all matches at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion, the over 2.5 would have been passed. In 2026, a corresponding bet would have even come true in four out of five home games and in six of the eight league games.

Dortmund – Statistics & current form

How motivated are the BVB pros? That is probably the crucial question when it comes to making a suitable prediction for Saturday evening between Cologne and Dortmund. One would expect Kovac’s team to keep their foot on the gas and respond to their last two defeats. However, the mental aspects cannot be completely ignored. The dream of winning the championship burst like a bubble in the classic match, and the Champions League adventure also came to an abrupt end. How can the Black and Yellows now pull themselves together to defend second place?

Will the BVB defense be porous again?

Statistically speaking, it is certainly understandable that Borussia are considered favorites in Cologne. BVB have lost only two games all season – both against the league leaders from Munich. 52 points after 24 matchdays is their best haul in seven years. Never before has a second-placed team had more points at this stage of the season.

However, the whole truth is that the defense in particular has slackened recently. Nine (!) goals have been conceded in the last three competitive games, six of them in the last two away games. Gregor Kobel has only kept a clean sheet in three of the last eleven games.

Because the offense continues to function well and, given the individual quality, is always capable of scoring goals, it is not surprising that at least three goals have been scored in all nine Bundesliga games involving Borussia in the 2026 calendar year. This statistic can be used as an additional argument for the over-goal odds.

Cologne – Dortmund Head-to-head record

BVB has won 17 of the last 27 meetings between these clubs. Cologne has only managed four wins in the same period, while six games ended in a draw.
The last four encounters also went to the Black and Yellows, with a total score of 11-1. Incidentally, 13 of the 27 matches mentioned would have even exceeded 3.5 goals. Spectacular games were often the order of the day. The first leg was different, with Dortmund even getting a bit lucky to come out on top 1-0. At Signal Iduna Park, both teams had many good scoring opportunities, but most of them went unused.

Cologne – Borussia Dortmund Tip

For the seventh time this season, 1. FC Köln will play in the Bundesliga on a Saturday evening. However, their record in such top matches has been disastrous so far. All six games to date have been lost. Across the season, Effzeh has lost ten of its last 13 Saturday evening games in Germany’s top flight.

Another defeat looms this weekend, as BVB, currently second in the table, are coming into the game on the back of a formidable league season, yet without any great motivation going into the final third of the 2025/26 season. It remains to be seen exactly how this will play out.

In view of this, I am deliberately refraining from a three-way bet in favor of Kovac’s team. Another factor is that Cologne usually puts in a decent performance at home and can hold its own even against stronger opponents. My preferred approach is therefore to place a bet on over 2.5 goals between Cologne and Dortmund. Betano’s 1.60 odds are worth a six-unit stake to me.
