Cup losers among themselves!

One week after the official start of competitive play in the ÖFB Cup, the Austrian Bundesliga also opens its doors. The first matchday brings with it an interesting encounter between two teams that embarrassed themselves in the cup. Grazer AK lost 0-1 to Dornbirn and, like Wiener Austria, who suffered a sensational 2-3 defeat to Voitsberg, had to throw in the towel against a lower-ranked club. In the direct duel, however, the Veilchen are now the favorites. My GAK vs. Austria Vienna tip also points to an away win!

On the one hand, this is because the home side already had problems in their own stadium last season, winning only three of their 16 games in the Merkur Arena in the regular season and the qualifying group. On the other hand, the visitors from the Verteilerkreis also have the upper hand in terms of quality. Another positive factor is that coach Stephan Helm’s team showed a good reaction after their embarrassing exit from the cup on the international stage. FAK won 5-0 at FC Spaeri Tiflis to qualify for the third qualifying round of the Europa Conference League.

The GAK vs. Austria Vienna prediction is also influenced by the fact that the Graz team is still lagging behind in the transfer market and the squad is far from complete. Against an Austria team that created plenty of chances in all three competitive games and failed to capitalize on most of them, it could be a long afternoon. In any case, I am pretty clear on the Violets and therefore also recommend handicap bets.

GAK – Austria Vienna Head-to-head comparison / H2H record

Although there have been a whopping 155 encounters between these two traditional clubs, only the two most recent meetings from last season are really relevant, as the other matches are very far in the past. Wiener Austria deservedly won both the home and away games in the regular season 2-1.

Since the core of both teams has hardly changed over the summer and, if anything, the Violets have strengthened their squad, there are once again good reasons to bet on last year’s third-placed team between GAK and Austria Vienna. Incidentally, you can find the aforementioned 2.00 odds for an away win in the Interwetten app. At the same time, you can automatically double your first deposit of up to €100 with the Interwetten bonus!

GAK – Austria Vienna Tip

Last season, Graz Ak secured their place in the league in the final stretch. Austria Vienna even had a chance to win the championship before the last matchday. This reflects the balance of power in this match quite well. Coach Stephan Helm’s team, which has the advantage of already having three competitive games under its belt, is the clear favorite in my eyes. This is also supported by the fact that FAK won both matches in 2024/25 and should also have the edge in terms of individual quality.

If I also take into account the disappointing results in the test matches and the embarrassing cup exit against Dornbirn last week, I am leaning quite clearly towards the Violets from Vienna. GAK have hardly been competitive so far, especially in attack. New players are definitely needed in August.

The capital club, on the other hand, has big goals this season and wants to perform better away from home than in 2024/25. I am convinced that they will succeed right from the start and that the odds on a GAK win will prove correct in the GAK vs. Austria Vienna match. For the handicap (-0.75 AHC), you get a solid 2.10, which I’m betting four out of a possible ten units on.
