Will Gala bring the Reds to their knees again?
With the clash between the Turkish champions and the reigning English title holders, the UEFA Champions League finally enters its hot phase on Tuesday evening with an early kick-off at 6:45 p.m.
One of these clubs is Liverpool Football Club, which faces an uncomfortable hurdle in the round of 16. Especially in the first leg in Istanbul, the tip for coach Arne Slot’s team is by no means a sure thing!
The most logical reasons for this are obvious. On the one hand, Victor Osimhen, Leroy Sané, and Co. already narrowly prevailed 1-0 against the Reds in front of their home crowd in the league phase. On the other hand, the Turks have not lost a knockout home game in an international competition for over 50 years (!). In fact, they have only suffered two defeats in 22 knockout games in front of their home crowd – the last one in 1973 against Atletico Madrid, when even the parents of today’s protagonists were not even born yet…
Although a look back at history indulges the superstitions of sports betting fans in particular, it is imperative to take into account in the Galatasaray vs. Liverpool prediction that “Cimbom” has been very difficult to beat in their own stadium this season.
Juventus also had to learn this lesson in the playoffs. The “Old Lady” lost 5-2 at RAMS Park and almost made it to the round of 16 a week later in the return leg. It will be all the more exciting to see whether Gala will show the friendly face from the first leg again or have to admit that the 2025 PL champion may be too big a challenge in a knockout round.
Incidentally, this is exactly what the Galatasaray vs. Liverpool odds on the 1X2 market suggest. While the Betano app offers a peak of 4.20 for a home win, Interwetten offers a maximum odds of only 1.80 for an away win for LFC.
Galatasaray vs. Liverpool AI prediction
Artificial intelligence paints a pretty clear picture for this matchup. No other CL round of 16 team is expected to score more goals in the first leg – based on xG value – than the Reds in Istanbul (2.07). This results in a predicted probability of victory of 56.6%, which corresponds to fair odds of 1.76. However, as mentioned above, the three-way market is offering odds of 1.80 on an away win, so the Galatasaray vs. Liverpool AI prediction is aiming for an LFC victory.
Galatasaray – Statistics & current form
Galatasaray took an important step towards defending their Süper Lig title at the weekend. For the first time in several years, “Cimbom” won an away derby at Besiktas (1-0), despite having to play with ten men for half an hour after Leroy Sané was sent off with a red card. With a current four-point lead over Fenerbahce, coach Okan Buruk’s team has all the cards in its own hands.
At home, Galatasaray is among the European elite!
However, the real highlight for the Yellow-Reds is coming up in the next two weeks. After a lucky escape in the playoffs against Juventus, the Lions of the Bosphorus have earned themselves two round of 16 matches against the English champions. Although the betting odds ahead of Tuesday’s first leg between Galatasaray and Liverpool give the Turks at best an outside chance of reaching the quarterfinals, there are certainly arguments to suggest that it will be a closely fought contest at RAMS Park.
First and foremost is their proven home strength, which is reflected on the one hand in only two defeats in their last 46 home games in all competitions (33-11-2). On the other hand, it can also be justified by their performances in this Champions League season. Three of the five games played at home have been won, with the only defeat coming in a 0-1 loss to Royale Union SG. In the league phase, Buruk’s team also had one of the most stable home defenses in the Champions League, conceding only three goals. In three out of four cases, a bet on under 2.5 would have paid off.
Taking into account the knockout nature of Tuesday’s game and the fact that Gala will certainly defend more compactly and deeper after conceding five goals in two playoff games against the “old lady,” I believe the value lies more in the Galatasaray vs. Liverpool odds on under goals.

Liverpool – Statistics & current form
While consistency was probably Liverpool Football Club’s greatest asset on their way to the English championship last season, their performances this season have been far too inconsistent! A perfect example of this came last week, when the Reds visited bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton on Tuesday evening in the Premier League and, in a complete surprise, lost 2-1. Just three days later, however, they took immediate revenge in the FA Cup (3-1).
Given the inconsistent performances that have been a recurring theme throughout the 2025/26 season, I am deliberately refraining from predicting an away win ahead of Galatasaray’s first leg against Liverpool! This is particularly because the Reds do not necessarily have to play for a win in Istanbul, but would certainly be satisfied with a draw with a view to the return leg at Anfield Road.
Liverpool last scored in January before the break
Although coach Arne Slot’s team is stronger individually and the majority of LFC players logically have more international experience, it must be noted that the Reds have repeatedly failed to perform at their best in recent times, especially away from home. The men from the Beatles’ city have only left the field as winners in five of the nine away games they have played since the turn of the year.
If you think it’s too risky to bet on the double chance 1X or to put the under 2.5 after 90 minutes on your betting slip, you still have the option, from a statistical point of view, to place a bet on a low-scoring first half. In the Reds’ last seven (!) competitive games, the score was always 0-0 at halftime. In the Champions League, they have also conceded only four goals in eight first halves. Gala’s goal average before the break also tips the scales in favor of an under 1.5 (1st half) bet!

Galatasaray – Liverpool Head-to-head comparison / H2H record
It is often an advantage for the pros to know that they have already beaten their opponents. Galatasaray already defeated Liverpool FC 1-0 in the league at the end of September. Osimhen scored the only goal of the day from the penalty spot. In general, “Cimbom” has a positive home record against English clubs in European competition. The Lions of the Bosphorus have lost only one of their last nine international matches at home against Premier League clubs (5-3-1).
In this particular fixture, Liverpool have won only one of five matches so far (1-2-2). Their 20% win rate is the lowest against opponents the Reds have faced at least five times in the Champions League.
Galatasaray – Liverpool Tip
All of Turkey will be watching Istanbul on Tuesday evening. At RAMS Park, Galatasaray will be looking to get themselves in a good position for the complicated away game in Liverpool next Wednesday. Although the home side are clear underdogs according to the odds, I definitely see the potential for an upset. After all, “Cimbom” has lost only two of its last 46 competitive games at home. In addition, Buruk’s team already beat the Reds 1-0 in the league phase. Apart from that, the visitors from the UK are also having an inconsistent season. Even a draw would definitely satisfy Slot’s team.
In addition to the double chance 1X or a risky value bet on under 2.5 after regular time, the Galatasaray vs. Liverpool tip on under 1.5 (1st half) catches the eye. Why? Firstly, because the last seven LFC games have always been 0-0 at half-time. Secondly, because this is a first leg in the knockout phase of the Champions League, where neither team wants to fall behind, and thirdly, because the home side should have learned their lesson from conceding five goals against Juventus. At most one goal before the break brings 1.70 at Betano, which I’m betting on with six units.
