Will Inter Milan retake the top spot in the table?

Since Daniele De Rossi took over as coach at CFC Genoa, the entertainment value of the Grifone’s matches has increased massively. The home side have played five competitive games under the 42-year-old so far. Five times, the game has featured at least three goals. That’s what we’re aiming for again with our Genoa vs. Inter Milan tip.

Up front, the Red and Blues are showing much more enthusiasm than under their predecessor Patrick Vieira. Excluding the clear 0-4 defeat in the Coppa Italia against Atalanta, the relegation-threatened club from the port city has scored at least two goals in all four De Rossi matches. A continuation of this series would be surprising for many, but is very welcome in our Genoa vs. Inter Milan prediction.

Fewer improvements have been seen in the defensive play. Genoa conceded at least two goals in three of five competitive games under the 2006 World Cup winner, and even conceded three or more goals in two matches. Individual mistakes are and will likely remain an issue.

Cristian Chivu’s team showed how quickly they can get into a frenzy in their last league game. At home, La Beneamata literally took apart one of the best defenses in the Italian top flight in Como (4-0).

The visitors are currently just one point off the top of the table. The way to get there will probably be through their own attack, which is more productive than any other club in Italian top-flight soccer (2.3 goals per league game).

Genoa – Inter Milan Head-to-head comparison / H2H record

The Nerazzurri have often had unpleasant afternoons at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris in recent seasons. At the start of last season, La Beneamata could only manage a draw (2-2) – their third consecutive draw at CFC Genoa’s home ground.

Let’s focus a little more on the current season and turn our attention to the set pieces of both teams. Both Genoa (5.48 set-piece xG) and Inter (7.53 set-piece xG) are among the four most dangerous teams when it comes to set pieces.

Genoa – Inter Milan Tip

Together with Christian Pulisic, Inter captain Lautaro Martinez leads the Serie A scoring charts (7 goals), closely followed by long-range specialist Hakan Calhanoglu (6 goals this season). Although the Nerazzurri have scored slightly fewer goals away (11) than at home (21), their average (1.83 goals per away game) is perfectly respectable.

However, Chivu’s team has also conceded more than one goal per away game so far (8 goals conceded in 6 away games). Taken together, Inter’s away games have averaged 3.16 goals per match. We are maintaining this rate with our Genoa vs. Inter Milan prediction.

The hosts are partly responsible for this, as they appear to be playing with more enthusiasm under Daniele De Rossi and are attacking the opponent’s goal more successfully. When in possession, their first moves are already becoming apparent, while the defense is repeatedly prone to mistakes.

With 19.6 expected goals (6th), the Rossoblu’s attacking play must be taken seriously. Inter should not underestimate De Rossi’s team, especially when it comes to set pieces.
