Will Hecking Start with a Loss?
TSG lost their last home game against Hamburg’s Kiezkickers. But with VfL coming to town, they now face—at least on paper—the perfect opponent for an immediate return to winning ways in the Kraichgau.
The Wolves are still waiting for their first away win in 2026 and have managed no more than one point in five away games. To find out whether betting on another loss for the visitors in the Hoffenheim vs. Wolfsburg matchup is worth it, check out our preview of the game in Sinsheim.
Before their recent home loss to St. Pauli, Hoffenheim had recorded eight straight wins in front of their own fans, tying their club record. They were clearly the better team against Hamburg as well, but this time they failed to capitalize on their numerous scoring chances as they usually do.
However, we view the loss as merely a blip, and the upcoming opponent is particularly weak on the road. Whether new coach Dieter Hecking can immediately address this shortcoming also seems questionable due to the structural problems within the VfL squad.
Hoffenheim vs. Wolfsburg AI Prediction
The AI estimates a 1.01 advantage for TSG in expected goals. Based on this difference, it opts for a Hoffenheim vs. Wolfsburg AI tip on a home win in the Asian handicap (-0.5).
Hoffenheim – Stats & Current Form
The Kraichgauers aren’t wasting any time this season: They’ve already scored 27 goals in the first halves of matches—only Bayern and Leverkusen have surpassed that number.
Given this, the odds for the home team to score again before halftime in the match between Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg are also attractive.
This prediction is supported by the visitors’ consistently weak defense in the first halves. Wolfsburg have already conceded 22 goals before halftime—the third-highest total in the league.
The hosts also bounced back well from the aforementioned defeat in their last home game. Last weekend, TSG immediately returned to winning ways with a 4-2 victory in Heidenheim.
Lemperle is back in Hoffenheim’s attack
Another positive for the hosts is the return of Tim Lemperle to the attack. The forward had been sidelined for three league games due to injury, but has been available again for the past two league matches.
Although he has only made brief appearances so far, this did not prevent him from contributing a goal in the recent victory at the Brenz. Just how strong the Kraichgauers’ offense is from a collective standpoint is also evident in the fact that Coach Christian Ilzer’s team has scored the most goals in the league alongside Bayern and BVB.

Wolfsburg – Stats & Current Form
The “Wolves” changed coaches as early as November of last year. At that time, Daniel Bauer took over from Paul Simonis, but even under his leadership, the club from the Mittelland Canal failed to get back on its feet.
After picking up just one point from their last seven league games, the club’s management pulled the plug again and let him go. His successor is now a familiar face in Wolfsburg: Dieter Hecking.
The 61-year-old previously managed VfL between 2013 and 2016, and did so with great success. Under the “King,” Wolfsburg won the DFB Cup in 2015 and finished as runners-up in the league.
On top of that, he averaged 1.62 points per game with Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga (126 games: 56 wins, 36 draws, 34 losses). Only Lorenz-Günther Köstner (1.67) has a better record among the Wolves’ previous coaches.
Wolfsburg must improve its defense
The first item on Hecking’s to-do list is now to stabilize the defense. They have already conceded 55 goals, which is the second-highest total in the current Bundesliga season after Heidenheim. Furthermore, Wolfsburg have never conceded more goals at this stage of the season in their Bundesliga history.
There has been no sign of improvement on the defensive end recently either: Looking back at the past five league games, the visitors have conceded another 13 goals—the highest total in that span. Furthermore, Wolfsburg has kept a clean sheet only once this season and has gone 17 consecutive games without one.
Given this context and the fact that the hosts, as described, boast the second-best offense in the league, we believe the betting odds for more than two goals scored by TSG in the match between Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg are also worth considering.
Furthermore, the North Germans have been ineffective on the road for quite some time: In 2026, they have earned no more than one point in five away matches and conceded an average of 3.6 goals.

Hoffenheim – Wolfsburg Head-to-Head Record
Hoffenheim is unbeaten in its last two matches against the 2009 German champions (1-1-0) and has scored five goals in those two games. However, since the start of the 2018/19 season, the Wolves have won four of their seven Bundesliga away matches against TSG (4-0-3)—they have not recorded more away wins against any other club during this period.
Furthermore, VfL averages 1.89 goals per Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim, the best record among current Bundesliga teams. Nevertheless, the odds for the upcoming Hoffenheim vs. Wolfsburg match favor the home team.
Hoffenheim – Wolfsburg Prediction
The visitors are having a truly horrific season: Instead of the targeted European spots, VfL is now fighting against relegation from the top flight for the first time. With Dieter Hecking, the club also hired its third coach of the season just a few days ago, and his sole objective is to avoid relegation.
Currently, the Wolves are in second-to-last place, and even the relegation playoff spot is already four points away. With TSG, the visitors now face a top Bundesliga team. The Kraichgauers are third and, for their part, on course for the Champions League.
We also view the visitors’ tactical issues as structural and do not believe that Hecking, despite all his experience, can resolve them quickly. In light of this situation, a bet on a home win by at least a two-goal margin looks promising for the match between Hoffenheim and Wolfsburg.
