Will Leverkusen miss out on Champions League qualification?

Merlin Polzin spoke bluntly about himself and his team after their 1-2 defeat to RB Leipzig last weekend. Earlier than usual, the 35-year-old and his team will have the opportunity to make amends in the HSV vs. Leverkusen tip.

The two Bundesliga clubs will face each other in a rescheduled match on Wednesday evening. This was followed by a 1-1 draw against Mainz and, most recently, a 2-1 defeat against RB Leipzig.

Apart from VfB Stuttgart (1.11), no other team in the German top flight has conceded fewer goals per 90 minutes than the Hanseatic club (1.13 – the same as B04). With a solid defense, a surprise is possible in the HSV – Leverkusen tip, even against the Rhinelanders.

Regaining momentum

Not many would have predicted this before the season: HSV is once again number one in the north. At least if the current table is anything to go by. While Wolfsburg (17th), Werder Bremen (16th), and St. Pauli (15th) are battling it out around the relegation spots, the promoted team occupies eleventh place.

However, their lead over the trio is slim – they are only three points ahead of the Kiezkickers. The Hanseatic team has earned its good position in the battle to avoid relegation thanks to its strong form in the 2026 calendar year (10 points from 8 Bundesliga games).

Home games and good defensive work are the foundation for many points. At the Volksparkstadion, Polzin’s team won five of their six victories this season, averaging 1.58 points per game (away: 0.64) and conceding 1.25 goals per game (away: 1.73).

Leverkusen – Statistics & current form

There is a lack of fire, a lack of intensity. Statements like these have been made repeatedly in recent press conferences and interviews with the Werkself. Most recently, Jarell Quansah spoke again about deficits in these areas after the 1-1 draw against Mainz – an alarming sign for a club with Champions League ambitions.

Bayer won only one of their previous four Bundesliga games (4-0 vs. St. Pauli). Leverkusen took only two points from the remaining three games and never scored more than one goal. The lack of goals cannot be attributed to a lack of chances.

Last weekend, Mainz had no trouble repelling the Rhinelanders’ attacking efforts for a long time. Union Berlin suffered the same fate on the previous matchday (0-1), and even the harmless Foals (1-1) almost earned three points in the derby.

Personnel shortage on the rails

A lack of form could prove fatal for Hjulmand’s team at the Volksparkstadion. Leverkusen travels to northern Germany with only two goals scored in their last three competitive games. It is thanks to their defense that they have not conceded more defeats.

The Werkself has conceded a maximum of one goal in eleven of their last twelve competitive games.
Since the beginning of the year, only VfB Stuttgart (4-1) and Olympiacos Piraeus (2-0) have found ways to score at least two goals against B04. It is quite possible that this rescheduled game will see few goal-scoring opportunities.

The problem for head coach Hjulmand is the right flank. Within a week, Lucas Vazquez and Arthur – both planned for the right side – were injured. The alternatives are 18-year-old Axel Tape and the more offensive option Ernest Poku.

HSV – Leverkusen Head-to-head comparison / H2H record

The last competitive match between the two teams took place in 2018. On matchday 23 of the Bundesliga, B04 took three points from the Volksparkstadion with a narrow 2-1 win. A year earlier, Leverkusen had lost 1-0 at the Hanseatic club’s home ground.

Both teams have conceded few goals since the start of the year (1.13 per 90 minutes each). The North Germans have had to push their offensive department to the limit every match day since the start of the season in order to score points. They often lacked pace, won one-on-one duels and speed. There was too little depth and the side shifts were played too slowly. If Polzin’s team can rediscover the energy they had before the RBL defeat, Bayer will have to fight hard for the win.

We can’t imagine how B04 will increase its sluggishness in its own ball movement within a few days to put the promoted team under massive pressure for the entire game and force it into mistakes. We expect a close catch-up game with little goal threat but a great atmosphere.
