Who will secure the final World Cup spot?

On Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Iraq and Bolivia will face off in the 2026 World Cup playoffs. Looking at the FIFA World Rankings, the “Lions of Mesopotamia” seem to have slightly better chances of winning, as Graham Arnold’s team currently sits at No. 58, while the South Americans are only at No. 76.

But that isn’t really meaningful. Individually, the two teams are absolutely on equal footing. This is also suggested by the bookmakers’ odds, as with maximum odds of 2.45 (Iraq) and 3.00 (Bolivia), the win odds are not far apart. So, in search of the best Iraq vs. Bolivia tip, we need to go into much more detail.

Normally, in the second section of our Iraq vs. Bolivia preview, we would now look at the home and away records of the two nations. Since this match is taking place in Monterrey—and thus in Mexico—that part is unnecessary, however. It’s far more interesting to see how the two teams ended up in the battle for the final World Cup spot.

For the South Americans, the journey was rather unspectacular; with only 20 points from 18 matches, Oscar Villegas’s team probably doesn’t even know how they managed to qualify for the playoffs in the end. Ten losses, 35 goals conceded, and an eight-point deficit to sixth place simply aren’t worthy of a World Cup berth. Furthermore, La Verde also struggled greatly in the playoff semifinal against Suriname (March 26, 2026) and ultimately won by a narrow 2-1 margin.

When we compare this to the journey of the Lions of Mesopotamia, it quickly becomes clear why the Iraq vs. Bolivia odds favor a victory for the Arab side. Graham Arnold’s team would have deserved a World Cup spot long ago and fell just short twice.

To be precise, the Iraqis were just one point short in the third round of AFC qualifying and just one goal short in the fourth round. Furthermore, Iraq lost only three of their 20 qualifying matches, two of which were against the top Asian team, South Korea. The 2026 World Cup is now within reach for the third time.

Iraq – Bolivia Head-to-Head Record

In the first three sections of our analysis, there is thus nothing to suggest that the South Americans will advance.

Fundamentally, however, this does not change our assessment, as the two nations have only faced each other once so far, ending in a 0-0 draw.

However, since that was merely a friendly match from 2018, the head-to-head record is unlikely to play a significant role in determining the Iraq vs. Bolivia betting odds. The upcoming match is thus the first “real” encounter between these two teams.

Iraq – Bolivia Tip

We recommend the Iraq vs. Bolivia betting tip “Iraq qualifies.” This is primarily due to the way both teams reached the match for the final World Cup spot. Given the South Americans’ very weak performances in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, a spot in the World Cup would simply be undeserved.

Furthermore, Oscar Villegas’s team failed to impress us in the semifinal against Suriname. Iraq, on the other hand, should have qualified for the World Cup long ago. For this reason, we believe that the Lions of Mesopotamia will ultimately win a close match.

For those who’d rather avoid a straight win bet, we recommend the Iraq vs. Bolivia odds for “both teams to score – yes.” This is primarily because the South Americans have had major defensive issues and have already conceded 36 goals in a total of 19 qualifying matches. Furthermore, Oscar Villegas’s team last kept a clean sheet on away or neutral ground in 2021, so conceding a goal is almost inevitable.

So if the Bolivians want to secure their World Cup ticket, they need to score at least one goal of their own. At the very latest after conceding the first goal, La Verde will go all out, because after all, this is a do-or-die match for a reason.
