Will the Rhine-Main Derby end in a dull scoreless draw?
In the fast-paced world of soccer, people often talk about the fresh momentum that a coaching change is supposed to bring at best. In the case of Eintracht Frankfurt, the switch on the sidelines from Toppmöller to Riera has certainly had the desired effect. The Spanish head coach has not only stabilized what was once the Bundesliga’s most vulnerable defense but has even transformed it into one of the league’s most solid defensive units. In four of six Bundesliga matches with the confident Riera on the sidelines, SGE kept a clean sheet. Unsurprisingly, my Mainz vs. Frankfurt prediction therefore suggests that there will likely be few goals in Sunday afternoon’s Rhine-Main derby.
Stability and structure, by the way, are also two of the favorite terms in Urs Fischer’s personal soccer lexicon. Since taking the helm at FSV Mainz 05, the Swiss coach has also ensured that consistency and resilience in defensive work have significantly improved. Despite consistently strong performances, however, the Rheinhessen side’s lead over 16th place remains just three points.
Having just advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, Mainz 05 are therefore in need of every point, though this applies to both sides in the Mainz vs. Frankfurt matchup. The Eagles, too, naturally want to keep their foot on the gas in the race for European spots.
In my view, the odds are good that the clubs from these neighboring cities—about 30 km as the crow flies separate the carnival stronghold on the Rhine and the financial hub on the Main—will first face off as equals and second, once again demonstrate their defensive strengths. Against this backdrop, you can confidently add the odds for Under 2.5 to your betting slip for the Mainz vs. Frankfurt match.
Mainz vs. Frankfurt AI Prediction
It is extremely rare for artificial intelligence to calculate exactly the same xG values ahead of a match. In the Rhine-Main derby, however, the AI sets a 1.34 for both clubs, which means nothing other than that the probabilities of victory are relatively close together. However, if we look at the betting odds offered on the 1X2 market, a slight edge in favor of the home team becomes apparent.
Mainz – Statistics & Current Form
Since Thursday evening, it has been confirmed that FSV Mainz 05’s international adventure in the Conference League continues. Thanks to a well-deserved 2-0 home win against the Czech club Sigma Olomouc, the Rhinelanders advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will now face Racing Strasbourg.
However, the focus remains on the league. There, FSV remains in the relegation zone. Sitting 13th in the standings, they are just three points ahead of 16th place. Public perception, however, is far more positive, primarily because the Red-Whites are now playing a second half of the season at European Cup level following a disastrous first half. They have earned 15 points from nine matches in the second half of the season so far—more than clubs like Leverkusen, RB Leipzig, SC Freiburg, or even Eintracht Frankfurt.
Mainz 05 hasn’t conceded a goal in over 270 minutes
Their home form is also particularly noteworthy. Across all competitions, the Rheinhessen side has played eight home games under Urs Fischer and lost none of them. They have five wins and three draws. In 50% of these matches in front of their own fans, Mainz 05 also kept a clean sheet. In fact, they have kept three consecutive clean sheets. Since mid-December, only Borussia Dortmund has been able to score more than twice against FSV.

Frankfurt – Statistics & Current Form
Although Albert Riera has been in charge at Eintracht Frankfurt for less than two months, he has already made his mark in the Bundesliga and caused a stir with his bold approach. Despite the fact that his flamboyant verbal fireworks polarize opinion and leave him wide open to criticism, the initial assessment is positive.
The SGE has earned eleven points from six matches with Riera as coach. All three home games were won, while away from home, they have yet to secure a win in three attempts (0-2-1). Overall, the Eagles have now gone seven Bundesliga away matches without a win—their longest losing streak in over three years. I consider it a risky and unlikely prediction that this dry spell will end on Sunday in the (minor) derby of all places.
Riera has undoubtedly made the right adjustments at Frankfurt
Nevertheless, I am convinced that the Hessians will once again put in a very solid performance. Apart from an unnecessary goal conceded on a penalty kick at Union Berlin’s Alte Försterei and the three goals conceded away at FC Bayern Munich, Riera’s team has yet to concede a goal. In four of the six matches mentioned, the Under 2.5 would have come through. Also, in four of those matches, only one team scored at most.
This is one of the reasons why the signs are mounting that Sunday afternoon’s match will also be a low-scoring affair. Incidentally, Robin Koch’s suspension doesn’t change that. The defensive leader received a yellow-red card last week during the flattering 1-0 home win against Heidenheim and will therefore have to watch from the sidelines during the 27th matchday of the Bundesliga!

Mainz – Frankfurt Head-to-Head Record
Eintracht Frankfurt boasts a very positive record against Mainz 05. Of the last eleven Bundesliga clashes, the SGE has lost only one. Instead, they’ve celebrated five wins and five draws. However, the full picture also includes the fact that Mainz have only been defeated once in a total of 17 Rhine-Main derbies played at home (6-10-1). The Nullfünfer narrowly lost the first leg at Deutsche Bank Park 0-1.
Now, however, two different coaches are on the bench, which further increases the likelihood that, looking back at the past six encounters, the Under 2.5 will come in for the third time.
Mainz – Frankfurt Prediction
FSV Mainz 05 heads into Matchday 27 of the Bundesliga with momentum. After securing a well-deserved spot in the next round of the Conference League on Thursday evening, coach Urs Fischer’s squad has set its sights on remaining unbeaten across all competitions for the seventh consecutive time.
At the same time, it would also mark the ninth home game under the Swiss head coach in which the Rheinhessen side manages to avoid a loss. There’s no need to fear Eintracht Frankfurt these days, especially on the road. The Hessians haven’t won any of their last seven Bundesliga away games.
Given that both opponents have recently defined themselves primarily through a solid defense and generally concede few goals, I recommend betting on Under 2.5 goals for the Mainz vs. Frankfurt Rhine-Main derby. Depending on your risk appetite, you can bet that Frankfurt will fail to score at all, or that the match combo “1X & Under 3.5” will pay off. I’m sticking with a maximum of two goals in the match and risking a notional stake of four units at odds of 2.08.
