Can the bottom team upset the record champions?

On paper, it seems like a foregone conclusion when the English record champions welcome the current bottom team in the Premier League to their home ground. The Wolves have only picked up two points out of a possible 54 and are already 16 points behind the first non-relegation spot.

Nevertheless, in our opinion, betting on a home win for the Red Devils in Manchester United vs. Wolverhampton is not a sure thing. Rúben Amorim’s team continues to be too shaky, while the Wanderers already put in a very impressive performance on Saturday in their narrow 1-2 defeat at Liverpool FC.

Under Rob Edwards, who took over as manager in the West Midlands in mid-November and is expected to lead the rebuilding process in the Championship even if relegation becomes increasingly likely, there is a sense of optimism at Wolverhampton once again. New discovery Mateus Mané also caused chaos for the champions from Liverpool at the weekend.

The 18-year-old striker was recently promoted to the first team by the Welsh coach. Although André, the Wanderers’ midfield engine, will be missing from the Theatre of Dreams due to a yellow card suspension, we still believe the bottom-of-the-table team is capable of another spirited performance at Old Trafford. Although it is not overly likely that they will earn any points, there is a lot of value to be found in betting that the Wolves will score at least one goal.

If the Wanderers put in a similarly good performance as they did on Saturday at Anfield Stadium, it could even be a game between two evenly matched teams. After all, Old Trafford is no longer an impregnable fortress. In 2025/26, only three teams (Nottingham (15), West Ham (21), and Wolverhampton (23)) conceded more goals at home than Manchester United (12).

Manchester United – Wolverhampton Head-to-head record

Head to head: 57 – 20 – 39

The two teams have met 116 times in total, with Manchester United leading the head-to-head record with 57 wins. The Red Devils have won eight of their last eleven Premier League games against Wolverhampton (three defeats) and already beat the Wanderers 4-1 in the first leg three weeks ago in the West Midlands. However, Rúben Amorim’s men lost their last home game against the Wolves 0-1.

Manchester United – Wolverhampton Tip

Considering that Wolves have lost their last eleven Premier League games in a row and are languishing in 20th place in the table with only two points from a possible 54, there seems to be virtually no alternative to predicting a home win for Manchester United against Wolverhampton.

However, it should be noted that the Wanderers have recently shown somewhat more appealing performances, while the record champions returned to sixth place with a win against Newcastle but have not yet ended their downward spiral. Moreover, that 1-0 win against the Magpies on Boxing Day was only the second game in the 2025/26 season in which Rúben Amorim’s team managed to keep a clean sheet.

Manchester United also has the fourth-weakest home defense in the top flight of English soccer and has not kept a clean sheet in any of its last four Premier League matches against Wolves. Against this backdrop, we believe the bottom-of-the-table team has a good chance of scoring an away goal at the Theatre of Dreams and at least putting up a fight against the record champions at times.
