Will the Sky Blues continue their winning streak?
Malmö FF, the reigning double winner of the Allsvenskan, is still only in fifth place after 16 matchdays, but has made up some ground recently. The Sky Blades are unbeaten in their last seven competitive games (four wins, three draws), with the last three games all ending in victory. At first glance, it seems like a good bet to go for a home defeat for the promoted team in Östers vs. Malmö.
Not only has Östers IF won just one of their seven home games in the 2025 season (two draws, four defeats), but the players from Vaxjö are also pretty tame in attack. No other team in the Allsvenskan had a lower expected goals value (14.0) or fewer touches in the opponent’s penalty area (228) in 2025. Their tally of just twelve goals, including only five at home, is also the lowest in the league, which suggests that Östers’ match against Malmö will not be a high-scoring affair.
Malmö FF has recently lost the offensive punch it had during its double-winning season. The Sky Blues are currently out of the title race because they have scored only 23 goals in 16 league games. Against this backdrop, a result such as 0-0 at the Visma Arena in Vaxjö should not be categorically ruled out, even though the visitors have won six of their last eight Allsvenskan matches against Östers IF, including five clean sheets.
Östers – Statistics & current form
Östers Idrottsförening has a rich tradition and once achieved the feat of winning the championship title in its very first season in the Allsvenskan as a promoted team in 1968. This was followed by three more national championships in 1978, 1980 and 1981, before the club from Vaxjö gradually faded into obscurity. However, after being relegated from Sweden’s top flight at the end of 2013, the club announced its return to the country’s top division for the 2025 season.
However, coach Martin Foyston’s team is clearly fighting against relegation with a budget comparable to that of a German third division club. So far, without success. With twelve points from their first 15 league games, the returning club is in a direct relegation spot. However, if Östers manages to pick up a point against Malmö, the club that once beat AS Roma 1-0 in the UEFA Cup, it could be enough to at least climb into the relegation play-off spot.
Östers must step up their offensive game
It should be noted that Östers IF is definitely ready for the first division defensively. The 21 goals conceded and, above all, the mere nine goals conceded at home are rock-solid statistics. What weighs much more heavily is that the very defensive style of play has clearly been at the expense of offensive punch. Both the total of only twelve goals scored and the mere five home goals, which resulted in only one win in seven home games (two draws, four defeats), are the lowest in the league.
It should be noted that the players from Vaxjö have certainly had some bad luck. No other team in the 2025 Allsvenskan hit the post or crossbar as often as Östers IF (nine times). However, the offensive performance data also shows that this alone was not the reason. Neither the expected goals value of just 14.0 nor the number of touches in the opponent’s penalty area (228) are better than any other club in Sweden’s top division…
Malmö – Statistics & current form
Malmö Fotbollsförening is both the record champion and record cup winner with 24 league titles and 16 national cup victories. Incidentally, the Himmelsblatt (meaning “sky blues”) were able to add to both of these figures last fall when, under coach Henrik Rydström, they won the national double in the far south of the country for the first time since 1986 (!).
However, MFF is currently unable to build on this strong season. After 16 matchdays in the 2025 season, they have only seven wins to their name and are in a sobering fifth place in the table (six draws, three defeats), which is why the coach has come in for some criticism. At least the southern Swedes, who have also successfully cleared the first hurdle in the Champions League qualifiers, are not lacking momentum. Malmö is now unbeaten in seven competitive games (four wins, three draws).
Malmö has sometimes lacked punch
The Himmelsblatt’s biggest asset is undoubtedly its defensive stability. With only twelve goals conceded in 16 league games, MFF has the best defense in the Allsvenskan. The problem is that even for the southern Swedes, that compactness comes at a high price. After all, it is due to their 23 goals from twelve league games that more than half of their 16 league games so far (nine) have not been won (six draws, three defeats).
In our opinion, it is therefore risky to take advantage of the odds for tip 2 against Östers against Malmö, which are 1.47 in the Bwin app, for example. After all, the Himmelsblatt are now facing a compact team that knows how to defend.
However, one small advantage is that the double winners’ game is not reliant on a single star player. This is evidenced by the fact that ten different players (excluding own goals) have scored the last eleven goals in league play. The total of 13 different goalscorers in the first 16 matchdays is also the highest in the league.
Östers – Malmö Head-to-head record / H2H record
Head to head: 2 – 4 – 6
Only twelve competitive matches have been played between the two teams, both of which have a long tradition but have not often been found in the same league. Malmö FF leads the head-to-head record with six wins. The Sky Blues have won five of the last eight meetings between the two teams in the Allsvenskan without conceding a goal.
Östers – Malmö Tip
The betting odds from the best bookmakers are leaning significantly towards the visitors in Östers’ match against Malmö, which is a rather bold prediction. After all, conceding “only” nine goals in seven home games is still a reasonably solid record, while the Himmelsblatt, as reigning double winners, are not involved in the battle for the championship because they have repeatedly lacked offensive punch.
Despite Himmelsblatt’s strong form, we would not want to categorically rule out a goalless draw in this match, which would ruin the already low odds for a tip 2. We therefore recommend betting on Östers against Malmö with a double chance X2 and under 3.5 goals, which takes this eventuality into account and would even cover a 1-1 draw.
