Will Sunderland also upset the reigning champions?

Sunday evening could not have been more bitter for Liverpool FC. Despite leading 1-0, the Reds lost the top-of-the-table clash at home to Manchester City 1-2 and, in sixth place, continue to lag well behind their own expectations. The gap to fourth place has already grown to five points, while even twelfth-placed Newcastle are only six points behind the reigning champions. Another setback looms for Florian Wirtz and Co. this week, as betting on LFC is anything but a sure thing ahead of Sunderland’s match against Liverpool!

For example, when looking at the Sunderland vs. Liverpool prediction, it is important to note that the promoted team from the northeast of England is the only Premier League team that has not lost a single match at home this season. With a remarkable record of seven wins and five draws from twelve home games, the Black Cats are in fourth place in the PL home table. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have conceded fewer goals at home (eight each) than the former FA Cup winners, who only secured their place in the 2025/26 Premier League season via the Championship playoffs.

This contrasts with the Reds’ relatively below-average away record. Slot’s team has won just a third of its twelve PL away games. The goal difference is even negative, with 19 goals scored and 21 conceded. Ninth place in the away table and just two wins in their last ten (!) PL away games are further indications that, in my opinion, the odds on the hosts winning a point are too high ahead of Wednesday’s game between Sunderland and Liverpool.

My preferred approach is therefore to bet on the double chance 1X between Sunderland and Liverpool. Betano is offering an impressive 2.12 for this.

Looking at the statistics, it would also be conceivable to bet on a draw. The Reds have shared the points with their opponents in four of their last seven PL matches. Sunderland have also fought hard to earn impressive draws against Manchester City (0-0) and Arsenal (2-2).

Sunderland – Liverpool Head-to-head record / H2H balance

What does the head-to-head comparison between Sunderland and Liverpool have to do with Danish cult striker Nicklas Bendtner? The former scandal-prone professional, who also played for VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga, scored the goal that secured Sunderland’s last victory against LFC in March 2012. Since then, the clubs have faced each other in eleven more Premier League matches, with the Reds winning six and another five ending in draws.

Incidentally, the Black Cats have scored only 19 goals in a total of 33 PL matches. The first leg in early December ended in a 1-1 draw at Anfield Road.

Sunderland – Liverpool Tip

Liverpool Football Club has remained unbeaten in 19 consecutive PL games against promoted teams. However, the last four encounters of this kind have all ended in draws. I wouldn’t rule out a draw on Wednesday evening either. The hosts are unbeaten at home (7-5-0) and also have one of the best home defenses in the English top flight. Anyone who has already scored against Arsenal and Manchester City at home at the Stadium of Light this season can undoubtedly do the same against the struggling Reds, who, to make matters worse, will have to do without the suspended Szoboszlai on Wednesday evening.

Because the reigning champions have only won two of their last ten PL away games and are generally having a weak season at the national level, I don’t really understand why the slot team is so clearly favored. In any case, I disagree and am therefore going for the Sunderland vs. Liverpool tip on 1X. The 2.12 in the Betano app is worth a bet of four units to me.
