Will two lackluster teams cancel each other out?

While 1. FC Union Berlin spent the international break in ninth place in the table and no longer has any immediate relegation worries, FC St. Pauli occupies the relegation spot. Although the Kiezkickers are three points ahead of the first relegation spot, they are already two points behind safety. This makes it all the more important for the Hamburg side that their bet on an away win at Union Berlin’s Stadion An der Alten Försterei comes through. However, FCSP has failed to win any of its last nine away matches across all competitions (one draw, eight losses) and has recently suffered five consecutive defeats.

The Köpenickers aren’t exactly in top form heading into this home match, having lost three of their last four league games (one win) and, with eight points, playing their weakest second half of the Bundesliga season ever. Consequently, in the Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli match, the prediction of a home win for the Eisernen is by no means a sure thing, especially since FCU has repeatedly failed to make an impact in front of the opponent’s goal. But that applies just as much to the Kiezkickers, which is why we see the greatest value in this league match on Easter Sunday in the prediction that no more than two goals will be scored at the An der Alten Försterei stadium.

It is striking that in the 2026 calendar year, both teams averaged fewer than one goal per league match. Both sides have scored a total of eleven goals in twelve league matches this year—the joint-lowest tally in the league. It’s also worth noting that FCU conceded just four goals in the first half-hour—fewer than any other Bundesliga team. It’s quite possible, then, that not much will happen in the first half and the match will go into halftime tied.

Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli AI Prediction

The AI generally agrees with our betting recommendation and expects this match to have by far the fewest goals on Matchday 28 of the Bundesliga (xG 2.07), meaning that under goals in the Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli match are also highly favored according to the AI prediction. However, the AI finds slightly more value in another bet: a home win for the Köpenickers, which Betano rates at 2.15, implying a probability of 46.5 percent. Because the supercomputer calculates a 51.6 percent chance of victory for Union Berlin—more than five percentage points higher—the AI assessment suggests that the favorite tip comes with a very positive expected value.

Union Berlin – Statistics & Current Form

On the one hand, 1. FC Union Berlin is playing its weakest second half of the Bundesliga season ever and has just lost three of its last four league games (one win). On the other hand, however, the Köpenick side are sitting in a single-digit league position—one that everyone along the Spree would surely have gladly accepted and signed on the dotted line at the start of the season—even though the gap to the European qualification spots is too wide for it to amount to a truly resounding success.

Nevertheless, there is much to suggest that Union Berlin will secure a home win against St. Pauli, welcoming a declared favorite opponent to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. They have won all five of their most recent home games against FCSP. Across all competitions, they have gone nine home games against the Hamburg side without a loss (eight wins, one draw).

Union Berlin lacks a drive toward the goal

Nevertheless, the strong league position cannot hide the shortcomings. Offensively, Union Berlin has lacked punch, particularly in the 2026 calendar year. In twelve Bundesliga matches, they have scored only eleven goals. Furthermore, Steffen Baumgart’s team ranks among those with the fewest shots on goal (just 36 in twelve matches in 2026, averaging only three per league game).

Defensively, however, the Köpenick side starts their matches extremely solidly and has conceded the fewest goals in the league during the first half-hour. The quarter-hour before halftime, however, is problematic, as they have already conceded 16 goals during that period. Set pieces play hardly any role offensively, with goals coming almost exclusively from open play or via penalty kicks.

St. Pauli – Statistics & Current Form

FC St. Pauli lost two Bundesliga matches in a row again before the international break and, with 24 points after 27 games, is having one of the weakest seasons in the club’s history in the top flight of German soccer. Only in 2001–02 (21) and 1977–78 (equivalent to 19) did the team have fewer points at this stage of the season.

The away record remains problematic as well. Five of the six away games since the winter break were lost, and the team has managed just one win in its last 13 away matches (two draws, ten losses). Across the league, only Heidenheim has earned fewer points on the road (four) than FCSP (eight). This also explains why, for the Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli match, the odds from top bookmakers clearly favor Union Berlin, with St. Pauli’s away win priced at 3.75 on the bet365 app.

St. Pauli is too reliant on set pieces

As previously mentioned, the relegation worries of the team currently third from the bottom of the table are primarily due to a lack of firepower. Just like Union Berlin, FC St. Pauli scored a mere eleven goals in twelve league games in the 2026 calendar year.
In addition to having the fewest shots on goal in the league (only 122), the Brown-Whites also had the lowest expected goals (xG) value in the league in 2026 (only 11.6).

Their reliance on set pieces is striking. Half of all goals this season came from set pieces, and most recently, seven of the last ten goals. Danel Sinani, with five goals this season, is the Kiezkickers’ top scorer and already scored a goal in the first leg against Union Berlin. Accordingly, the 28-year-old is likely to start up front.

Union Berlin – St. Pauli Head-to-Head Record

Head-to-Head: 14 – 6 – 10

The two teams have faced each other 30 times so far, with 1. FC Union Berlin leading the head-to-head record with 14 wins. The Köpenick side already won the first leg at Millerntor 1-0 and have been virtually unbeatable at home against FC St. Pauli, particularly at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.

FCU has been unbeaten against Hamburg in nine competitive home games (eight wins, one draw). They have won all of their last five home games.

Union Berlin – St. Pauli Prediction

There are certainly arguments to be made for both teams, which makes it very difficult to predict the outcome of the Union Berlin vs. St. Pauli match. No result seems truly out of the question, although we don’t expect two of the Bundesliga’s weakest finishing teams—who thrive on playing compact defense—to put on a goal-scoring spectacle in a head-to-head matchup. It is far more likely that the match will be decided by a single goal or even end 0-0, which, depending on the results elsewhere, would also be a helpful outcome for the Kiezkickers.

Accordingly, the best approach is to steer clear of the three-way system and any match combos, and instead bet that a maximum of two goals will be scored in this match.
