Can Tottenham carry their Europa League momentum into the Premier League?

On Sunday, the 35th matchday of the Premier League will see West Ham take on Tottenham. West Ham will welcome not only their local rivals but also their neighbors in the table to the London Stadium. Currently, the two teams are separated by nine miles and one point in the table. There is nothing left to play for in the league for either team, as the three relegated teams have already been decided.

The Hammers are currently winless in seven games, but have managed two consecutive draws at home. This puts them in 17th place in the table. They also drew their last two home games against the Spurs. According to our West Ham vs. Tottenham prediction, we could therefore see another draw between the two teams.

Tottenham, on the other hand, finally celebrated a win again on Thursday evening with a 3-1 home victory against Bodö/Glimt in the Europa League. In contrast, things are not going well in the league: four consecutive PL away defeats and only one win in their last eight PL games put the Hotspurs in 16th place. What is striking, however, is that in the Spurs’ last four PL games, at least two goals were scored in the first half. There were also two goals in the first half of the Europa League game.

West Ham – Statistics & current form

West Ham United are unbeaten in their last four Premier League games against Tottenham Hotspur at home (two wins, two draws) – their longest such run since 1995 to 2001, when they went six home games in a row without defeat against the Spurs. In our West Ham vs. Tottenham prediction, we expect the Hammers to remain unbeaten.

Nevertheless, the current season has been anything but positive in London derbies: the Hammers have lost five of their last six home games against their city rivals – including four in the current 2024/25 season. In Premier League history, only three clubs have managed to lose five home London derbies in a single season: Millwall (1989/90), Wimbledon (1997/98), and Fulham (2018/19).

Hammers weak after taking the lead

West Ham also seem to be losing control of games at the moment: since Graham Potter took over in January, the team has already dropped 12 points after taking the lead – only Southampton (14) have lost more. In the last four games in which West Ham took the lead, they failed to win (three draws, one defeat).

Nevertheless, the Hammers have a record man in their ranks in Jarrod Bowen: his two assists in the 2-3 defeat to Brighton were his 36th and 37th in the Premier League for West Ham – no one has set up more goals for the Hammers. At West Ham, at least, there is some justification for their home record – the West Ham vs. Tottenham odds for a home win for the Hammers are currently 2.20.

Tottenham – Statistics & current form

Tottenham Hotspur are currently experiencing an extremely inconsistent season – things are not going well, especially away from home. They have lost their last four Premier League away games – the last time they had such a negative run was in spring 2019 (six defeats in a row).

What makes it particularly bitter is that they conceded four or more goals in each of their last two away games (2-4 against Wolves and 1-5 at Liverpool). The last time they suffered three consecutive away defeats was in October/November 1976. According to our West Ham vs. Tottenham prediction, Tottenham should at least remain winless.

Tottenham have already suffered 19 league defeats this season – as many as in 1993/94 and 2003/04. Only in 1991/92 did they lose more games in a single season (20). Particularly striking: in six Premier League games, Spurs took the lead but still lost – five times in the last ten games alone. Only Southampton (twice) and Blackburn Rovers have ever managed to lose seven such games in a single season.

Will the Spurs add another defeat to the Hammers’ tally?

At least the Spurs can rely on set pieces: they have scored ten goals from corners – only in three seasons have they been more successful in this category (13 in 2022/23, eleven in 1994/95 and 1999/00). Youth development is also a priority: Tottenham have already given 86 appearances to players under the age of 21 this season – a club record for a 38-game season.

Despite all its problems, Tottenham triumphed 4-1 in the first leg against West Ham – now they have the chance to win both league games against the Hammers for the first time since 2019/20. If you’re betting on an away win, West Ham vs. Tottenham offers attractive odds of 3.00.

West Ham – Tottenham Head-to-head record / H2H record

In the traditional rivalry between West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, the two teams have met 129 times so far – 123 of those games were in the Premier League, one in the FA Cup and five in the League Cup. Tottenham has the upper hand: The Spurs have won 57 games, while West Ham has celebrated 44 victories. 28 games ended in a draw. The goal difference also favors the team from North London, with 207:181 goals.

As the last two direct encounters at the London Stadium ended in draws, we also see a good chance of another draw between the two teams here. In that case, you will be paid betting odds of 3.70 for a draw in this Tottenham vs. West Ham match.

West Ham – Tottenham Tip

This match pits two teams in poor form against each other. The only thing that is guaranteed, especially in Tottenham games, is goals. Because the first half often ends with at least two goals for the Spurs, we are once again expecting at least two goals in the first half. As both teams are particularly vulnerable in defense, we expect both teams to score and over two goals to be scored.

West Ham currently has the upper hand in this head-to-head matchup thanks to their home strength against the Hotspurs. They are unbeaten in their last four home games, with two draws in a row most recently. The Hammers are currently winless in seven games, while the Spurs have only won one of their last eight PL games. Therefore, we believe that there will be no winner in this match and that both teams will settle for a point.
