Will the Wolves cause MUFC to drop points for the first time?

Starting this season, the Women’s Champions League will also be played in the new league format – albeit in a slightly more modest way than the men’s competition. Instead of 36 participating clubs, only 18 clubs are competing in the UWCL. The top four after six matchdays qualify directly for the quarterfinals, while the teams in fifth to twelfth place determine the other four participants for the round of the last eight.

The German teams’ prospects for the playoffs are absolutely intact, although the women of VfL Wolfsburg in particular have an extremely complicated remaining schedule ahead of them, with two English clubs and Real Madrid still to play. This makes it all the more important that a bet on coach Stephan Lerch’s team pays off on Wednesday evening in the fourth matchday of the Champions League between Wolfsburg and Manchester United Women.

The current standings show just how difficult the task against the MUFC women will be. The Red Devils have won all three of their UWCL matches in this phase of the league so far and are in an outstanding third place behind title contenders Barcelona and Lyon. This positive result is surprising in that the women’s division of England’s record-breaking men’s club is only participating in Europe’s most important club competition for the second time and had to qualify for it by finishing third in the domestic league last year.

However, it is also clear that the opposition has been average at best so far. United recorded two narrow 1-0 wins against Valerenga and Atletico Madrid. The first tough test at home against PSG was also won, although the 2-1 result could be classified as lucky given the distribution of chances.

To make matters worse, the MUFC women have lost two of their last three competitive games and put in a particularly poor performance in the 3-0 derby defeat at Manchester City at the weekend. I am therefore refraining from making a prediction between Wolfsburg and Manchester United Women in favor of the visitors from the UK.

Meanwhile, the Wolfsburg women are right on target. PSG were put in their place with a 4-0 defeat at home in their opening game, before Valerenga secured a narrow 2-1 victory. The 3-1 defeat in Lyon was expected and not a setback. In the Bundesliga, the Green-Whites are in second place behind Bayern Munich with 22 points out of a possible 30.

The 34 goals scored in league play are an impressive tally, surpassed only by the league leaders from Munich (35). At the weekend, Lerch’s team celebrated an important 3-1 home win against SC Freiburg, advancing to the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup. Looking back on the last seven competitive games, it was the fifth win for the former UWCL winners from Lower Saxony.

The home advantage, the good form and the impressions so far in this phase of the league are all factors that lead me to primarily bet on the hosts ahead of the Wolfsburg vs. Manchester United Women match.

Wolfsburg – Manchester United Women Head-to-head comparison / H2H record

This is the first time ever that the women’s teams from Wolfsburg and Manchester will face each other in a direct duel. For two MUFC players, it will be a special reunion with their former employer.

Fridolina Rolfö was under contract in Wolfsburg from 2019 to 2021 and, after four years at FC Barcelona, now earns her living in the English industrial city. Dominique Janssen spent five years in the car city and has been lacing up her boots for Manchester United since 2024/25. However, the Swede and the Dutchwoman will not be meeting many of their old teammates, as VfL Wolfsburg also underwent a personnel shake-up in the summer, which has so far had a positive impact across all competitions.

Wolfsburg – Manchester United Women Tip

The home game between VfL Wolfsburg Women and Manchester United will be decisive for the rest of the league phase in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

If, after the 1-3 defeat against Lyon two weeks ago, they now suffer another defeat against the English team, they would fall back in the standings and would have to write off at least a top 4 finish prematurely. However, if the betting odds for a home win between Wolfsburg and Manchester United Women prove to be true, the Green-Whites could even overtake their opponents in the table.

Although the Red Devils have had a strong league run so far, winning all three games, their performance has been far from convincing. In addition, the English women are struggling away from home and have lost two of their last three competitive games, including a 3-0 defeat in the derby against Manchester City. I am therefore combining 1X with at least two goals in the game in my Wolfsburg vs. Manchester United women’s tip and am getting 1.70 for this at Interwetten. I am betting five units and would not be surprised if Lerch’s team even wins their home game. My prediction: 3-1!
