Does Sonego have what it takes to beat Shelton?

Ben Shelton brings speed, Sonego brings timing – Wimbledon brings the stage. The young American and his 30-year-old rival seem to be connected by an invisible bond this season, facing each other in their third consecutive Grand Slam tournament. We give the edge to the top 10 player in our Shelton vs. Sonego tip.

Sonego has been on the tour since 2013, is participating in the classic grass court tournament in London for the seventh time and has developed a certain fondness for the green surface. However, the former world number 21 has never made it past the fourth round at the All England Club. We don’t think he will do so in the Shelton vs. Sonego prediction either.

Ben Shelton – Statistics & current form

The 22-year-old is looking to keep his days short at the third Grand Slam of the year. The US boy has already survived three rounds at the All England Club. The left-hander has yet to drop a set, thanks in part to his high-speed serves.

Except for Mpetshi Perricard (153 mph) and Zhukayev (149 mph), no player has served faster than Shelton (148 mph). His next opponent has already felt the wind from these whipping serves several times this season.

Lorenzo Sonego faced the two-time Grand Slam semifinalist in both the Australian Open (quarterfinals) and Roland Garros (first round), coming up short in both matches. There was no shortage of excitement in the two previous encounters, but the match at the All England Club will take place under different circumstances. This is reflected in the Shelton vs. Sonego odds.

Shelton is enjoying the tournament

Shelton completed his first-round match in just under 2.5 hours. The American won the second round in 2 hours and 12 minutes. Sonego’s last match alone took longer than these two appearances combined (5 hours and 4 minutes).

In our Shelton – Sonego prediction, we point to the Italian’s energy expenditure, who already has twelve sets under his belt. Shelton, on the other hand, limited himself to the minimum (nine) and was able to enjoy the rest of the time with his family and girlfriend who had traveled with him.

As long as the world number ten can bring his powerful serve into play, victory in this match is almost certain. Shelton has had an excellent ratio of aces (14.6 per match) to double faults (4.4 per match) on grass over the past 52 weeks and underlined his good form on grass by reaching the semi-finals in Stuttgart.

Lorenzo Sonego – Statistics & current form

The Italian tends to serve for points and usually gains the advantage by skillfully building up points. His service rating (279.7) is nowhere near that of his opponent (293.3). Nevertheless, his style of play suits grass court tennis.

The 30-year-old has won four tour titles in his career, one of them on grass. However, Sonego has not traveled to London in the best of form. The Italian took part in three grass court tournaments in the run-up to the tournament, but was eliminated in the second round in Eastbourne and Halle. His appearance in Stuttgart was even over after his first match.

Unlike in the two previous Grand Slam duels with Shelton, we expect a clear victory for the American in our Shelton – Sonego prediction. Sonego has never made it past the fourth round in London and has never reached the semifinals of one of the four major tournaments in his career. His opponent has already achieved this twice at the age of 22.

Sonego fails again against Shelton

If you are looking for more betting options for the Shelton – Sonego match, you should consider the over/under tiebreaks. Six of the nine previous sets involving the Italian ended in a tiebreak. “Over 1.5 tiebreaks” would not contradict our Shelton vs. Sonego prediction.

The Italian is particularly inferior to his opponent in these nerve-wracking serve duels. In their four previous encounters, two sets went to a tiebreak. In both cases, Shelton prevailed with his powerful serve.

The Shelton vs. Sonego odds already suggest that Sonego is likely to lose his third Grand Slam duel of the year against the much younger US pro. In his third-round match, the Italian won fewer points (192) than Brandon Nakashima (195).

Ben Shelton – Lorenzo Sonego Head-to-head record / H2H record

A trend can also be seen from the head-to-head record. Shelton has won three of their four meetings so far. Wimbledon will be the first time the two have faced each other on grass. The US boy will need to control the experienced Italian’s attacks at the net and keep him on the baseline.

Ben Shelton – Lorenzo Sonego Tip

Shelton has the better overall package in the Shelton vs. Sonego tip, has the best weapon of the two opponents in his repertoire (serve) and has obviously taken a liking to the classic grass court in London. At least that’s what his recent results suggest.

We are willing to take a certain risk and believe the 22-year-old will win in straight sets. With our selection of “Shelton to win (HC -2.5 sets),” you can collect 2.65 times your stake at Interwetten.
