Can Zverev pull off another win against the experienced Croatian?

For years, Marin Cilic has been among the world’s top players. His career spans three decades, most of which he has spent ranked among the world’s top 20 players. For our Marin Cilic vs. Alexander Zverev tip, we are particularly focusing on the 37-year-old’s consistency.

The Croatian achieved his greatest success in 2014, when he won the US Open. A Grand Slam trophy does not yet grace the trophy cabinet of his 28-year-old opponent. It is pretty much the only title the third-seeded player from Hamburg is still chasing in our Marin Cilic vs. Alexander Zverev prediction.

To mount another bid for a Grand Slam title, the German adjusted his playing style at the start of the year. More aggressive and daring than ever before, the 28-year-old is taking the initiative this season.

The world No. 4 views his current matches as an experimental phase, in which he is familiarizing himself with his adapted approach and exploring its limits.

The 24-time ATP title winner can still pick up a few tricks from his opponent. Depending on the situation, Marin Cilic himself likes to take risks, seeks the direct path to winning points, and is a classic offensive player. The crowd in Miami enthusiastically watched his comeback against Brandon Nakashima (2-6, 6-4, 7-6) in the previous round.

The German player’s opening match was less exciting; after receiving a bye in the first round, he needed only 69 minutes to defeat qualifier Martin Damm. The level of play will be high against the Croatian veteran, and we’re betting on Betano with odds of 2.80 for “3 sets in the match” in the Martin Cilic vs. Alexander Zverev matchup.

Marin Cilic – Alexander Zverev Head-to-Head Record

Eight years after Cilic (2005), Zverev began making his mark in tennis (2013). Their first match took place in 2015 on hard courts in the U.S. The Croatian won two hard-fought sets (7-5, 7-6) and advanced to the semifinals in Washington.

Since then, the former world No. 3 has not won a single match against the 2021 Olympic champion. Ahead of their rematch in Miami, Zverev has won seven consecutive encounters.

Marin Cilic – Alexander Zverev Prediction

Matches against Cilic have never been easy. The resilient veteran has pushed the Hamburg native to the limit in every encounter, forcing at least one tiebreak. Due to his advanced age, Cilic is no longer a player who dominates every week.

On good days, however, he reads the match exceptionally well and challenges the top players. He remains ranked among the world’s top 50 professionals (49th) and brings a positive year-to-date record (8-5) into the third-round clash against Alexander Zverev. We don’t want to deny the 2018 finalist his status as the favorite, though.

The first Masters tournament of the calendar year went quite promisingly for Zverev. He reached the semifinals at Indian Wells for the first time in his career. In doing so, the 28-year-old has made history. As one of only four players, the German No. 1 has reached the semifinals in all nine Masters tournaments.

The seven-time Masters champion improved his record for the year to 12-4 wins in his last match against Martin Damm. He’s in good form, and if the match goes to a third set as we expect, we see the third seed in pole position to advance.
