How much resistance will Union Berlin put up?

Things seem to be turning around for RB Leipzig. With four matchdays remaining, they hold a five-point lead over fifth place, making a Champions League spot increasingly likely. At 1. FC Union Berlin, however, the coaching change has fizzled out.

In Marie-Louise Eta’s debut, the Köpenickers lost their home game 1-2 to relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg and must now be careful to avoid another unpleasant season finale. However, if the prediction that the capital city team will earn a point against RB Leipzig holds true, FCU should be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

Fundamentally, it must be noted that the Köpenickers have no reason to shy away from the Red Bull Arena. The Ironers are unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga matches against RBL (one win, two draws) and have conceded more than two goals in only one of their last twelve competitive matches against the Saxons. This is precisely what our prediction for RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin is based on, as we expect a strong response from the capital city side, who could certainly make life difficult for one of their favorite opponents in the Bundesliga.

Moreover, this Bundesliga matchup has rarely been a one-sided affair, which is why we can’t quite understand why the odds for RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin are so heavily in favor of the Red Bulls.

However, since it’s undeniable that the momentum lies with the Saxons after four consecutive Bundesliga wins, while FCU has won only two of its last 15 league games (five draws, eight losses), an underdog bet is generally a bit too risky for us.

RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin AI Prediction

The Supercomputer AI also believes that the Saxons are being rated far too positively by the top bookmakers. Due to the overly one-sided odds, the AI prediction for RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin is that the Köpenickers will pick up a point. Betano lists odds of 3.30 for the Double Chance X2, implying a probability of 30.3 percent. The AI, on the other hand, calculates a 33.1 percent chance for Union Berlin to earn a point. This is significantly higher and creates a positive expected value.

RB Leipzig – Statistics & Current Form

After a lackluster 2024/25 season, RB Leipzig under Ole Werner seems poised to achieve its goal of returning to the UEFA Champions League after some twists and turns. At the very least, the Red Bulls head into the fourth-to-last matchday with a comfortable five-point lead over fifth place. Should RB Leipzig’s home win against Union Berlin come to pass, that lead would remain at least as large.

This is supported by the fact that RBL has recently been in impressive form, celebrating four consecutive Bundesliga wins. In fact, they have won six of their last seven matches in the top flight of German soccer (one loss), bringing their total to 18 wins after 30 matchdays. The only time they had more wins at this point in the season was in 2016/17 (19).

RB Leipzig impresses both offensively and defensively

One factor in this is the return of their home form. At the Red Bull Arena, the Saxons have won ten of their 15 Bundesliga matches in the 2025/26 season (two draws, three losses) and, most notably, scored 35 goals. Across the league, only FC Bayern—operating in a league of its own (60)—surpasses that, while strong home teams like Dortmund and Leverkusen managed only 33 home goals each. Moreover, across seasons, the Red Bulls have scored in each of their last 27 consecutive Bundesliga home games.

As if that weren’t enough of a bargaining chip, their defensive setup is also solid. In the 2026 calendar year, the Saxons conceded just 18 goals, making them, alongside Bayern, the joint-best defense during that period.

Union Berlin – Stats & Current Form

At 1. FC Union Berlin, the main desire these days is for calm. However, following the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart and the appointment of Marie-Louise Eta as the first female head coach in Bundesliga history, things have instead become even more turbulent—especially after the bitter 1-2 home defeat against relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg.

Even now, ahead of RB Leipzig’s match against Union Berlin, the odds are clearly stacked against the Köpenick side, although there were certainly signs of improvement against the Wolves. FCU had 25 shots on goal and 46 touches in the opponent’s penalty area. While the former figure is a club record in the top flight of German soccer, there were more touches in the opponent’s box only in December 2024 against VfL Bochum (54).

Union Berlin lacks offensive punch

Nevertheless, at the end of a promising debut by Eta, a defeat was recorded—the eighth in the last 15 league games, of which only two were won (five draws). With just 32 points from 30 matchdays, the capital club has actually recorded the second-weakest Bundesliga season in club history (after 29 points in 2023/24).

Despite the performance data mentioned, the main problem persisted even against Wolfsburg: The Köpenick side simply scores too few goals.

With just 14 goals, Union Berlin has one of the weakest attacking lines in the 2026 calendar year and now faces, of all teams, the Bundesliga’s co-best defense during the same period. On paper, the odds don’t look too promising.

RB Leipzig – Union Berlin Head-to-Head Record

Head to Head: 8 – 3 – 7

Across all competitions, 18 competitive matches have been played between the two clubs so far, and with eight wins, RB Leipzig actually holds a narrow overall lead. In the Bundesliga, however, the Red Bulls have lost six of their 13 matches against 1. FC Union Berlin (five wins, two draws). Of all teams against whom they have played at least three matches, RBL has a higher loss rate against FC Bayern (55 percent) than against Union Berlin (46 percent).

RB Leipzig – Union Berlin Prediction

Based purely on the current form of both teams, the prediction for RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin must lean toward a home win for the Red Bulls, especially since Marie-Louise Eta’s debut at FCU was a complete failure.

The problem, however, is that the odds do not support a bet on the favorites, especially considering the head-to-head record and the Saxons’ long winless streak against the Ironers in their three Bundesliga matchups (two draws, one loss). Moreover, RBL has an even higher loss rate (55 percent) against Bayern in the top flight of German soccer than against Berlin (46 percent).

Time and again, the Saxons have struggled against the Iron’s defense. Against this backdrop, we also believe that Marie-Louise Eta will, first and foremost, fine-tune the defensive setup for this complicated away match. In just one of the last twelve competitive matches between the two teams have the Red Bulls scored more than two goals, and we consider this threshold difficult to breach even now.

Our tip, therefore, regardless of the match’s outcome, is for under 2.5 home goals, for which Betano is offering odds of 1.70 on RB Leipzig vs. Union Berlin, and we’re betting four out of ten units on this.
