Will BVB bounce back?

How has SC Freiburg coped with their bitter elimination from the DFB Cup? This question will inevitably influence Sunday afternoon’s Dortmund vs. Freiburg prediction. Both physically and mentally, Thursday night’s semifinal in Stuttgart was extremely draining.

The fact that the decisive goal for Stuttgart came in the 119th minute of all times, sealing Freiburg’s painful elimination just before the penalty shootout, made it hurt even more. Less than 72 hours later, Schuster’s squad faces a challenge at Signal Iduna Park and will need another energetic performance there to maintain their current strong position in the race for European spots.

Although there is currently unrest in Dortmund and squad planning for the coming season seems to be taking a more prominent role than day-to-day sporting business, the Dortmund vs. Freiburg predictions from the most popular bookmakers are clearly leaning toward the hosts.

While the Black and Yellows have lost two Bundesliga matches in a row for the first time in a year and have barely been able to perform at their peak for weeks now, the visitors from the south of the country recently celebrated two Bundesliga wins in a row—their first such streak in the second half of the season, by the way.

Given that SCF—as already mentioned—is wrapping up its third consecutive midweek match and faces the highlight of the Europa League semifinals against SC Braga next Thursday, I still lean toward betting on the home win in the Dortmund vs. Freiburg match.

Dortmund vs. Freiburg AI Prediction

For the AI, Borussia Dortmund is also the clear favorite. However, the 60.8% probability of a BVB win is significantly lower compared to the betting odds on offer. This still results in a nearly 40% probability that Freiburg will score at Signal Iduna Park.

Dortmund – Stats & Current Form

For a long time, Borussia Dortmund’s pragmatic—and in most cases, boring—results-oriented football was tolerated. Primarily because it was successful! In recent weeks, however, the tone around Signal Iduna Park has become noticeably harsher. The reason is the lack of results coupled with increasingly weak performances…

After a more than fortunate 2-0 win at VfB Stuttgart earlier this month, BVB recently lost 0-1 at home to Leverkusen and 1-2 at TSG Hoffenheim.

Although Borussia are virtually guaranteed to finish as runners-up, those in charge are still asking themselves how things should proceed. Even the coaching situation surrounding Niko Kovac is now the subject of heated debate again. Anything seems possible this summer.

Dortmund can rely on their home form

Despite the internal squabbles, BVB naturally has enough quality to bounce back from their disappointing performances on Sunday afternoon and deliver three points to the fans in their own stadium once again. Dortmund has won 73% of all Bundesliga home games this season. Along with VfB Stuttgart, Kovac’s team also boasts the most solid home defense. Gregor Kobel has conceded just 14 goals at home. Borussia has won eight Bundesliga home games without conceding a single goal.

That is exactly why, ahead of the Dortmund vs. Freiburg match, I recommend, on the one hand, the betting odds on a home win with a maximum of four goals in the game, which stand at 1.86 on NEO.bet. On the other hand, with a bit of risk-taking, you can even bet that BVB will once again secure a 3-0 victory against their favorite opponent from Freiburg.

Freiburg – Stats & Current Form

Things are coming thick and fast for SC Freiburg these days and weeks. For the first time in the club’s history, the Sport-Club has made it to the Europa League semifinals. There, a beatable opponent in SC Braga awaits on the next two Thursdays. However, Schuster’s squad was denied another highlight in the DFB Cup following their 1-2 loss in extra time to VfB Stuttgart.

Despite the fact that Freiburg were juggling three competitions until the end of April—which has meant playing every three days for the past three weeks—the focus must remain on the league. There, the South Germans are locked in a battle with Eintracht Frankfurt for seventh place, which would be enough to qualify for the Conference League—and possibly even the Europa League—provided SC Freiburg doesn’t take the crown in the 2025/26 Europa League.

Will Freiburg inadvertently throw away their away game in Dortmund?

Although coach Julian Schuster is trying to rotate the squad and manage the workload, I could well imagine that after 120 minutes in the cup less than 72 hours ago, the team might eventually run out of steam. Both physically and mentally.

Compounding the issue is the fact that the team currently sitting seventh in the table has struggled significantly more on the road this season than at home. SCF hasn’t even managed to win one in three Bundesliga away games. They’ve lost four of their last seven Bundesliga away matches. In all of those losses, Grifo, Beste, and the rest of the team failed to score a single goal. Overall, their mere 16 goals scored on the road rank among the lowest in the league.

Apart from that, my BVB vs. Freiburg prediction in favor of the hosts is supported by the fact that Schuster’s side hasn’t had much success against the top teams in the Bundesliga this season (or previously).
The Sport-Club has failed to win any of its last 19 league matches against clubs that were in the top three before the start of the matchday. Away from home, their record stands at just one win in the past 45 (!) Bundesliga matches against top-three teams.

Dortmund – Freiburg Head-to-Head Record

As mentioned in the introduction, Borussia Dortmund thoroughly enjoys playing against SC Freiburg. Especially at home. There, they have recorded 21 wins in their last 25 Bundesliga home games. Their only loss dates back nearly 20 years. In fact, BVB has won 16 of their last 17 Bundesliga home games—with just one draw! In their last five visits to Signal Iduna Park, SC Freiburg has always conceded at least three goals.

Five of the past seven home wins against SCF also came with a clean sheet. The first leg in Breisgau, however, ended in a 1-1 draw in mid-December after Bellingham was sent off with a red card in the 53rd minute and Lucas Höler equalized Bensebaini’s opening goal in the 75th minute to make it the final score.

BVB – Freiburg Prediction

For Borussia Dortmund, the season has effectively been over for several weeks now. Nevertheless, the Black and Yellows’ aspirations are naturally much higher than what has been shown on the field recently. After two consecutive losses and just one goal scored in 180 minutes, Kovac’s squad wants to get back on track and reward their own fans with three points in their penultimate home game. In many respects, the odds are looking pretty good for that.

Freiburg is coming off a bitter cup defeat and has had little time to prepare or recover. Furthermore, the Sport-Club has lost 21 of its last 25 Bundesliga away games at Signal Iduna Park. On several occasions, SCF was even thoroughly outclassed or failed to score a single goal.

I think it’s very likely that Borussia will secure the win this time as well—possibly even with a clean sheet. However, my BVB vs. Freiburg tip is for a home win with under 4.5 goals, as this match combo represents a suitable compromise.
