Will BVB win in the Lower Rhine region?
Anyone who heard the tearful speech by Rainer Bonhof, president of Borussia Mönchengladbach, a week ago at the annual general meeting can imagine what an intense, grueling, and emotionally draining season the fans of this historic club from North Rhine-Westphalia have been through. Although the phrase “have gone through” is completely out of place here, as the Foals still haven’t secured their place in the league.
That could (and should) change this weekend during the 32nd matchday of the Bundesliga. Depending on Saturday’s results, a bet on a home draw between Gladbach and Dortmund would be enough for the home side to finally put the cursed 2025/26 season behind them.
Given the current form of both teams, however, it seems extremely risky to predict a 1X double chance outcome ahead of the Borussia derby between Gladbach and Dortmund. The Foals last won a Bundesliga match a month and a half ago. They have failed to secure three points in five consecutive matches. Apart from that, their performances have fallen squarely into the categories of “lackluster play” and “offensively harmless.” If coach Eugen Polanski’s team fails to generate more momentum, there’s a strong case for their first home loss in the top flight since January 25—a 0-3 defeat against VfB Stuttgart.
Although the visitors from the Ruhr region have long since achieved their minimum goal of qualifying for the Champions League once again, securing second place is an absolute must. They hold a five-point lead over RB Leipzig heading into this matchday. I therefore expect a focused performance from the Black and Yellows and can easily see myself betting on an away win!
Gladbach vs. Dortmund AI Prediction
The AI predicts that a maximum of three goals will be scored on Sunday afternoon at Borussia Park. At least, that’s what the Gladbach vs. BVB AI prediction suggests. The xG values are 1.11 for the Foals and 1.70 for BVB. This results in a combined expected goal total of 2.81, which is well below the Under 3.5 line.
Gladbach – Stats & Current Form
Tim Kleindienst is back! At the start of the week, the striker celebrated his long-awaited return to team training, although he initially only participated partially, and the (former) national team player will naturally need a few more weeks to get back into shape. Therefore, the header-strong striker will no longer be an option for Eugen Polanski this season.
What might have been possible this season with Kleindienst and Hack—who was also sidelined for a long time due to injury—is pure speculation. However, the Foals would likely not be in a worse position than they are now. Borussia has 32 points to its name—never before has a team in 11th place had fewer points with three matchdays remaining. Much like their rivals from Hamburg, Bremen, Berlin, or Cologne, Gladbach can therefore count themselves lucky that there are three clubs—St. Pauli, Wolfsburg, and Heidenheim—engaged in a snail’s-pace race at the bottom of the table.
Will Gladbach fail to score again on Sunday?
Although survival in the league isn’t yet guaranteed, planning for next season is already in full swing. Among other things, it remains to be seen whether Eugen Polanski will be allowed to continue beyond the summer. Looking back, however, his statistics read like a disaster. He managed only two wins in 14 matches in the second half of the season. Only Heidenheim, Union Berlin, and VfL Wolfsburg fared worse.
Since the far too toothless offense remains the perennial issue and BMG has managed just 13 goals in the past 14 matches, I wouldn’t be surprised if Borussia comes up empty-handed again on Sunday afternoon against the league’s statistically best defense.

Dortmund – Stats & Current Form
After two consecutive losses, Borussia Dortmund made an impressive comeback last week with a 4-0 home win against a tired Freiburg side. Maxi Beier opened the scoring, bringing his tally this season to nine goals and four assists. He has appeared 29 times for the Black and Yellows in the Bundesliga. It is precisely this combination, coupled with the belief that second-place Mönchengladbach will certainly create some high-quality chances, that leads me to predict that Beier will score again in the match between Gladbach and Dortmund.
Dortmund’s Approach: Defensive Stability and Offensive Stings
Otherwise, it should be noted that the team led by coach Niko Kovac—who has repeatedly given young talents playing time in the final stretch of this season—now boasts the league’s most stable defense. A total of 31 goals conceded and 14 clean sheets for Gregor Kobel speak volumes.
Because I am also convinced that the Croatian head coach will find the right words to avoid another toothless performance, the arguments in favor of BVB outweigh the others. This is not changed by the fact that Borussia Mönchengladbach has not left the field as the losing team in their last five consecutive home games. None of the opponents during this winning streak were of the caliber of the Westphalians, who can play completely uninhibited and will certainly want to put on a good match for their traveling fans.

Gladbach – Dortmund Head-to-Head Record
The Borussia derby has recently been firmly in the hands of Borussia Dortmund. In their last six competitive matches, BVB remained unbeaten against the Foals. Looking back at the past 25 encounters, the Black and Yellows have even recorded 20 (!) wins. The first leg at Signal Iduna Park was also a clear-cut affair in Dortmund’s favor, as they secured a 2-0 home victory just before Christmas. At the same time, it was the favorites’ first clean-sheet win since 2022—a feat that could very well be repeated this Sunday afternoon.
Gladbach – BVB Prediction
The last time Borussia Dortmund lost two away games in a row in the Bundesliga, Nuri Sahin was still on the bench. Niko Kovac is now in charge, and rarely has BVB shown such consistency as they are currently displaying. Because the quality is also there and there is currently no better defense in Germany—at least according to the numbers—the second-place team is, in my opinion, rightly favored in Mönchengladbach as well. Given the Foals’ recent performances, I therefore see value in placing a bet on the away win.
Although the Rhinelanders haven’t lost any of their last five Bundesliga home games, they now face a strong opponent who is still aiming to secure the runner-up spot. The Black and Yellows have better depth across all positions, which is why—provided the attitude and commitment are right—I recommend betting on the visitors to take all three points ahead of the Gladbach vs. BVB clash.
