Can the Gers handle the pressure?
On Friday evening, the 2026/27 season in Scotland kicks off at the Firth of Tay. If the bet on an away win by the favored Light Blues doesn’t pay off in the Dundee United vs. Glasgow Rangers match, it would be a first major setback for new head coach Derek McInnes following the major shakeup this summer. McInnes has been given a clear mandate to bring the title back to Ibrox after last season’s disappointing third-place finish. However, in our assessment, an away win isn’t nearly as likely as the top sports betting providers suggest, given the odds of around 1.55 for the away win.
For one thing, the Terrors are exceptionally strong at home. The Tangerines haven’t lost any of their last ten competitive home games (seven wins, three draws), during which time they sent champions Celtic Glasgow home with a 2-0 loss, among other results. Jim Goodwin has built a solid team that doesn’t have to shy away from the league’s top sides. With that in mind, for the Dundee United vs. Glasgow Rangers match, we wouldn’t bet on the favored Gers; instead, we’d predict that both teams will score in the season opener, regardless of the match’s outcome. The Terrors’ last home game against the Light Blues already ended in a 2-2 draw.
In fact, in the last six meetings between the two clubs, both sides have scored in every game, making this our top pick. The visitors, in particular, are likely to still lack chemistry following their major roster shakeup, especially since Nicolas Raskin is still on special leave after representing Belgium at the World Cup and new signing Vanja Dragojevic will miss the season opener due to visa issues.
Dundee United – Glasgow Rangers Head-to-Head Record
Head-to-Head: 26 – 29 – 79
A total of 134 matches have been played between the two teams so far, and with 79 wins, Glasgow Rangers clearly lead the head-to-head record.
Dundee United, however, has been waiting for another win against the Gers for 13 competitive matches now (four draws, nine losses). In their most recent home game on December 3, 2025, the Terrors were at least able to force a 2–2 draw against the Light Blues, demonstrating their general home strength.

Dundee United vs. Glasgow Rangers Prediction
On paper, of course, the Glasgow Rangers head to Tannadice Park as the favorites. While Dundee United, with limited transfer activity, is relying primarily on last season’s well-established lineup, this season opener for the 2026–27 season marks the beginning of a new era for the Gers. Derek McInnes is tasked with ensuring that the storied club once again plays a stronger role in the title race, and he has already shown in the run-up to the season that he is capable of making bold decisions. For example, he immediately named Hearts’ new signing Lawrence Shankland as captain.
Another factor, however, is the Terrors’ home form; they’ve been unbeaten in their last ten competitive matches at Tannadice Park (seven wins, three draws) and even defeated Celtic Glasgow 2–0. Also, since we’d be reluctant to rule out the Tangerines picking up a point, we therefore recommend betting that both teams will score in the season opener. This bet would have paid off in each of their last six meetings.
