Can Turkey withstand the immense pressure?
After opening-round losses to Australia and the United States, respectively, there is immense pressure on both teams, which will naturally affect the course of the game as well as my Turkey vs. Paraguay prediction.
Given that both teams came away empty-handed in their openers and now have their backs against the wall, so to speak, we can expect a tactical approach characterized by caution or risk minimization. The Paraguayans will set up a defensive wall and hope to capitalize on quick transitions against a Turkish defense that lacks speed. Arda Güler, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and company, however, will need to show a completely different side and inject much more pace and creativity into their own offensive play. If they succeed, their status as favorites will be justified. Otherwise, the highly ambitious “Ay-Yıldızlılar” (the Moon-Stars) face the threat of an early exit from the group stage.
For those who generally find it too risky to place a bet on the three-way market, the total number of goals is worth a closer look. Although bookmakers certainly don’t expect a spectacular match based on the Turkey vs. Paraguay betting odds, Winamax, for example, is still offering a solid 1.66 on the under 2.5.
Turkey vs. Paraguay AI Prediction
Artificial intelligence has also become more cautious ahead of Turkey’s second match. While the (very secret) dark horse was clearly favored against Australia in the World Cup, its role as favorite isn’t quite as pronounced this time around. However, this is also because the AI expects few goals as well. The probability of a win is calculated at 48.9%, meaning a bet on a Turkish victory offers no value. However, the combined xG value of 2.22 goals (1.35 vs. 0.86) justifies the Turkey vs. Paraguay AI prediction for the Asian Under 2.25, which pays 1.84 at bet365.
Turkey – Statistics & Current Form
Expectations for the Turkish national soccer team were enormous heading into the tournament. Thanks to their last-minute qualification via the playoffs and given their very talented roster, many fans were hoping for a commanding opening victory and, subsequently, their first advancement to the knockout stage of a World Cup in a long time.
But even the group stage match against Australia, which Montella’s team entered as clear favorites, ended in bitter disappointment. The 0–2 loss exposed numerous weaknesses and saw the euphoria give way to major disappointment within a matter of hours.
Turkey can expect a similar game dynamic against Paraguay
Offensively, in particular, the Turkish national team lacked the necessary cutting edge for nearly the entire match.
The numerous crosses found no real target in the penalty area. How could they? Kerem Aktürkoglu, who started as the lone striker, is barely 1.70m tall. There’s no true center forward on the roster! At the same time, the team seemed at a loss for ideas as soon as Australia closed down the central areas. Problems also surfaced on defense: The center backs were noticeably slow, struggled in transition situations, and were caught off guard by Australia’s pace on multiple occasions.
Once again, the opponent will cede possession to the “Crescent and Stars” and defend compactly. So once again, solutions are needed against a staggered, multi-man defense, as well as a significantly improved last line of defense. I expect the 2024 European Championship quarterfinalist to face another test of patience, and I wouldn’t be surprised if few goals are scored in the end.

Paraguay – Statistics & Current Form
It wasn’t just the Turks who fell far short of their own expectations on the first matchday of Group D at the 2026 World Cup; Paraguay, too, had set its sights much higher against host nation the U.S. The fact that it ended in a crushing 1–4 defeat came as a huge surprise, especially since coach Gustavo Alfaro’s team is actually known for its solid defense. Ten goals conceded in 18 matches during the tough CONMEBOL qualifiers in South America are/were evidence of that.
Will Paraguay park the right bus in front of their own goal this time?
Given their already dismal goal differential, they absolutely need points in the race to advance to the knockout round. After the clear opening-match defeat, another loss would be tantamount to an almost certain early exit, assuming they don’t manage a big win against Australia…
However, anyone who thinks this will lead to a bolder approach on the field is likely to be mistaken. Counterattacking remains the top priority in the Guaraníes’ game, and they’ll certainly want to step it up a notch in terms of concentration, tenacity in tackles, and aggressiveness when defending.
Given this form, I’m inevitably predicting a very tight match in my Turkey vs. Paraguay forecast. It’s quite possible that only one of the two teams—at most—will find the back of the net.

Turkey – Paraguay Head-to-Head Record
The only head-to-head match dates back to 1995. Back then, the national teams from Turkey and Paraguay played to a 0–0 draw. Even though the lack of goals could certainly serve as a blueprint for the upcoming World Cup match, the H2H record logically has no relevance whatsoever for Saturday morning.
In fact, you can count the number of times Turkey has faced South American national teams on less than one hand. However, their unfortunate elimination in the 2002 World Cup semifinals against Brazil remains unforgettable.
Turkey vs. Paraguay Prediction
I expect a very closely contested and low-scoring match between Turkey and Paraguay. Both teams lost their openers and are already under enormous pressure. Paraguay will likely sit deep and rely on counterattacks, while Turkey will once again have to find ways to break down a compact defense without neglecting their own back line. Given the disappointing offensive performances by both teams, I expect a tough, hard-fought match early Saturday morning.
In my Turkey vs. Paraguay prediction, I’m therefore leaning toward Under 2.5 goals—meaning a maximum of two goals in the match. However, I’d still give a slight edge to Montella’s squad, so it might well make sense to bet on a hefty 3.20 odds for a Turkish victory including a clean sheet. The Match Combo 1X & Under 3.5, at 1.67, also covers many possibilities.
