Will Les Gones Prevail in the Golden City?
A high-profile matchup has emerged in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The winner advances to the playoffs for a spot in the Champions League group stage. The loser must enter the Europa League group stage playoffs, which would generally be insufficient for Les Gones. Based purely on squad depth, the trend in the Sparta Prague vs. Lyon matchup points toward a bet on an away win for the French side, who have won five of their six previous international competitive matches against the Czechs (one draw). The problem, however, is that this marks OL’s first competitive match of the 2026/27 season, while the Rudí (meaning “the Reds”) have already played two league matches.
Sparta’s start to the Czech league, however, hasn’t gone all that smoothly. The team from the Golden City suffered a 1-3 loss at Zbrojovka Brno on the very first matchday, but at least managed to celebrate a 3-1 home win over Zlín last Friday. Three points, four goals scored, but also four goals conceded so far. Interesting fact: The Rudí scored exactly two goals in five of their last six Champions League qualifying matches and have a fundamentally offensive style of play.
Since we expect OL to come out swinging in the first leg as well, the outlook for a high-scoring match between Sparta Prague and Lyon looks promising. We recommend betting on over 2.5 goals in the Golden City.
Although Les Gones still have to prove their competitive edge, a loss by the Ligue 1 side would still surprise us. Les Gones have won all five of the other matches, including their most recent away game in the Golden City, which they won 4–3.

While the Prague side is already in full swing—though they’ve certainly come under criticism following their 1-3 loss to Zbrojovka Brno—Olympique Lyon is set to play its first competitive match of the 2026/27 season.
Although the French side kept a clean sheet in three of their last five European away games, they still need to prove after the summer break that they can remain just as solid defensively. In their final preseason match last Thursday, they suffered a shocking 0–4 loss to Betis Sevilla. It’s quite possible that Les Gones will look to take the initiative in the Golden City. With Juventus loanee Lois Openda, they now have a new key offensive player.
Given that five of the six European competitive matches between these two generally offensively-minded teams have always featured at least three goals, we once again find the best value in betting on a high-scoring first leg.
