Will Fener Crumble Under the Pressure of Its Own Fans?
Fenerbahçe is finally looking to return to Europe’s biggest stage. Since competing in the 2008–09 Champions League, the “Canaries” have been waiting in vain to return to Europe’s premier club competition and have since failed to qualify on multiple occasions. Consequently, their ambitions this summer are sky-high, especially since the club’s management has once again massively bolstered an already star-studded roster with investments totaling well over 80 million euros.
The team is clearly focused on the Champions League, and the pressure to finally make the leap into the group stage could hardly be greater. Nevertheless, in the match between Fenerbahçe and Sturm Graz, betting on the Turks is by no means risk-free, as the Styrians are traveling to Istanbul with plenty of confidence and a solid dose of international experience.
However, Fenerbahçe’s start to the qualifying round was far from as commanding as their individual talents might suggest. The fact that their Bundesliga opener didn’t go perfectly—ending in a 1-1 draw in Tyrol—does little to change that.
