Will the Rangers live up to their role as favorites in the first leg?
The final qualifying round before the Europa League playoffs is upon us. However, Jagiellonia has made a splash in the Conference League over the past two years after being eliminated from the main tournament. Two years ago, they reached the quarterfinals of that competition against Betis Sevilla; last season, their run ended in the round of 16 playoffs against Fiorentina. At home, they remained undefeated in these matches against both teams from Europe’s top leagues.
Furthermore, Bialystok was among the strongest home teams in the Polish top flight last season, failing to score in only two home games. After two opening wins in the Ekstraklasa, the team from northeastern Poland is also in strong form and heading into the upcoming clash against the Scottish record champions with confidence.
In recent years, the Gers have been overtaken in the domestic league by their longtime rival, Celtic Glasgow. The Rangers last celebrated a league title in the 2020–21 season. Last season, the storied club even finished only third in the domestic league. Things didn’t go much better on the international stage last season either.
With just four points from eight matches, the team under new head coach Derek McInnes was eliminated after the group stage. The 14 goals conceded in the group stage matches also clearly highlighted the weaknesses of the record Scottish champions. Under McInnes and with some fresh faces in the squad, the hope is to usher in better times once again.
However, the Gers managed only a draw at Dundee United to kick off the league season, following a disappointing run of form in the final games of last season that included four losses in their last five matches.
