Will Montella be fired in Italy of all places?

Turkey is currently in the midst of a deep crisis: After three matchdays, they have suffered three losses and a goal difference of 1:8. Added to this is their disappointing performance at the World Cup, which has further increased the pressure on coach Vincenzo Montella. Turkish media have long been calling for his dismissal, while the Italian outwardly appears calm.

This tense situation is a key factor in the Italy vs. Turkey prediction, as Montella desperately needs a win on Monday night in his home country to save his job. The question, therefore, is: Are the Turkish national team players ready to give it their all on the field for their coach, or will the proud Crescent and Star suffer another setback?

The mood is significantly more relaxed among the Italians, who, under Roberto Mancini, have undergone a major roster overhaul and given their squad a fresh look. The former European Championship-winning coach has called up numerous new players and seems to have at least generated some initial positive momentum.

Four points from their three matches so far may not be an outstanding record, but the recent 1-1 draw in France was certainly a respectable result. If the Azzurri can build on this performance, they are certainly the rightful favorites on home soil. Nevertheless, in my view, there are several reasons to at least cast some doubt on a classic “Italy vs. Turkey” prediction.

For example, one should never underestimate the national pride of the Turks, who are desperate to make amends after their embarrassing 1-4 loss in the first leg—regardless of who’s on the bench.

Tactically speaking, it’s also worth noting that Italy is currently most dangerous on the counterattack, as their strong performance against France demonstrated. Against Turkey in the first leg, however, the Squadra Azzurra benefited primarily from a sluggish start by their opponents. Relying primarily on good counterattacks might not be enough at home in Bologna.

That’s why, ahead of the Italy vs. Turkey matchup, I think the odds on a home win are too low and see more value in the Double Chance X2. My main bet, however, is on a maximum of three goals in 90 minutes.

Italy – Turkey Head-to-Head Record

In their 14 previous meetings, Italy has recorded ten wins, while Turkey has yet to win and has drawn four times. The most recent matchup on September 28 ended in a decisive 4-1 victory for the Azzurri, who were already leading 3-0 after just 27 minutes, effectively sealing the game early.

It was particularly striking that Italy repeatedly found gaps in the Turkish defense with fluid passing combinations and consistent transition play, while Barış Alper Yılmaz merely managed to save face after the break. Given this history, the Italy vs. Turkey betting odds for another home win are understandable, though they seem too low to me for an attractive bet.

Italy – Turkey Prediction

After a convincing 4–1 win in the first leg and the recent 1–1 draw against France, Italy heads into this rematch with Turkey on a roll. Nevertheless, I expect a much more evenly matched game on Monday night, as the Turkish team is under considerable pressure after three losses and a goal difference of 1–8 and is likely to focus on a more solid defense.

While Italy has already shown flashes of its offensive quality under Roberto Mancini, it will first have to find ways to break down an opponent that is expected to sit deep. The current situation therefore doesn’t necessarily point to another lopsided victory for the Azzurri, especially since Turkey will be looking to redeem itself after the first leg.

My preferred Italy vs. Turkey bet is therefore “Under 3.5 Goals” at odds of 1.62, on which I’m betting five units. I expect Italy to have a much tougher time this time around, while the Turks will look to come out with a different mindset and greater defensive stability. At the same time, I don’t rule out a surprise by any means: Those willing to take a bit more risk can consider the double chance X2 on the Turkish national team.
