Can the Swiss get off to a winning start on home ice?
It’s still best to play at home. At least that’s what the Swiss can say in our Switzerland vs. USA tip for the World Championship opener. After all, this 2026 Ice Hockey World Championship is taking place entirely in Switzerland (in Zurich and Fribourg).
So the Swiss have home-ice advantage on their side, and they’ll need it in their first game against Olympic champions the USA. That said, the Americans have almost completely overhauled their roster compared to the Olympics.
Only Matthew Tkachuk will be back in action in Switzerland. The rest of the squad consists partly of very young prospects. Consequently, the US team isn’t considered the top favorite to win the World Championship.
However, the DEB team found out on Sunday that they can play some solid hockey, losing to the Americans 2-5. Nevertheless, for Switzerland vs. USA, our prediction is a victory for the Swiss team, fueled by their home crowd.
We’re also betting on over 4.5 total goals, as games involving the US team traditionally feature a lot of scoring (many young players looking to prove themselves).
USA – Switzerland Head-to-Head Record
The Swiss have won only one of their last five head-to-head matches, though we need to make a distinction here. For one thing, the U.S. team often fielded significantly more NHL stars, and for another, two of those U.S. victories came only after overtime.
The last matchup at the 2025 World Championship also went very narrowly to Team USA, 1-0 in overtime. Back then, the game-winning goal was scored by NHL star Tage Thompson, who, like so many of his teammates, will not be participating this time.
USA – Switzerland Prediction
Yes, the USA won their last warm-up game against Germany 5-2, but they lost the shot-on-goal count against the DEB team 23-30. This already shows that they weren’t dominant even in that game.
Against the Swiss, who are considered the stronger team, they won’t bring that same efficiency to the ice, which makes the odds on Switzerland a great value bet for Switzerland vs. USA.
As an alternative bet, betting on Switzerland -1.5 is a good option here. On the one hand, this significantly boosts the odds, and on the other, the Swiss should be on fire in front of their home crowd.
