That Liverpool is favored on Wednesday night at Anfield Road is, however, understandable to me: The individual quality, the home-field advantage, and the recent head-to-head record against Atlético all speak in favor of the Reds. I wouldn’t focus my betting solely on a home win, though; I’d also bet on a high-scoring game.
Defensively, Liverpool hasn’t looked consistently solid so far, despite their recent shutout victory, while Atlético has also produced some spectacular matches in recent weeks and possesses plenty of quality on offense. The odds for Over 2.5 goals in the Liverpool vs. Atlético Madrid match are particularly interesting.

With an expected xG of 1.78 to 1.05, Liverpool has a 54.8% probability of winning, while a draw and an Atlético victory are each estimated at 22.6%. So I don’t think they’ll keep a clean sheet on Wednesday!
Liverpool’s trump card is their home form
Another factor in Liverpool’s favor is their impressive European record. The Reds have never lost their Champions League opener in front of their home crowd. In twelve previous home openers, they’ve recorded ten wins and two draws. Their recent home record in the group stage and league phase of European competitions is even stronger. Liverpool has won 17 of its last 18 matches in this phase—impressive proof of just how difficult it is to beat the team at home on Anfield Road.
Atlético Madrid – Statistics & Current Form
Atlético Madrid heads to Liverpool in somewhat mixed form. After a 2-0 win against Málaga in their opener and a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, they followed up with a convincing 3-1 victory at Sevilla FC, before the Colchoneros suffered a 0-3 defeat at Athletic Bilbao last weekend. That leaves them with seven points and a 7–6 goal difference after four matchdays—Atlético is certainly dangerous on offense, but defensively, they still lack their usual stability.
Simeone is no longer just a defensive fanatic
For Diego Simeone, however, the match at Anfield Road is familiar territory. This is already his 14th Champions League season as Atlético’s coach—an extraordinary level of continuity at this level. In recent years, Atlético has regularly been among Europe’s elite and even reached the semifinals in 2025–26. However, Liverpool presents a special challenge, even though Simeone has come out on top in three of his four previous head-to-head matchups with Andoni Iraola.
Julián Álvarez remains a major topic of discussion. The Argentine wanted to leave Atlético for Barcelona this summer, but the club vehemently opposed the transfer. The situation even escalated to the point where Álvarez was booed by his own fans and, according to reports, suffered emotionally as a result. Following the failed transfer attempt, Simeone must now try to fully reintegrate the forward into the team—after all, the coach emphasized that he wants to do everything possible to make Álvarez feel important again. For Atlético, this could be decisive from a sporting perspective, as a mentally liberated Álvarez would be an enormous boost to the offense.
Despite the recent 0-3 loss, Atlético’s strong Champions League record speaks to its ability to score: In 22 of its last 24 matches in the group stage or knockout rounds of the Champions League, the Madrid-based club has scored at least one goal. That’s exactly why the Liverpool vs. Atlético Madrid odds hold their own appeal.

The head-to-head matchups between Liverpool and Atlético Madrid are much more evenly matched than the recent run of results might suggest.
