Will the Spurs slip even deeper into crisis?

In the Premier League, Liverpool and Tottenham are falling far short of their own expectations after four matchdays. In the EFL Cup this week, they now have a chance to build confidence and inject some positive energy into the team. In the Liverpool vs. Tottenham preview, the Reds face a team that, after four matchdays, is still waiting for its first win and even its first league goal, while Liverpool remains undefeated despite having earned only three points. However, due to the tight schedule and upcoming league matches, changes to the lineups are expected on both sides.

Ahead of the Liverpool vs. Tottenham cup match, I think a home win for the Reds is a pretty obvious pick, despite the expected rotation. The League Cup, which has been held since 1960—and is often somewhat disparagingly referred to in the UK as the “Mickey Mouse Cup,” ranking clearly behind the FA Cup in importance—has nonetheless produced an impressive list of winners in recent years.

Since the 2013–14 season, only well-known top clubs have won the trophy, including Liverpool in 2022 and 2024; Tottenham, on the other hand, has been waiting for its next triumph since 2008. While the upcoming league match this weekend naturally takes higher priority for both coaches, the Spurs in particular desperately need a victory after their rocky start to the season. After all, they managed a convincing 5–1 victory in their first EFL Cup match against Charlton Athletic. But the task at Anfield will be far more difficult!

Still, in my view, the Reds have the clear advantages: the home-field advantage at Anfield, their better record so far this season, and likely greater depth on the roster—especially given the expected personnel changes—all favor Liverpool.

Tottenham is still waiting for its first goal in the Premier League after four games and, like Liverpool, had to settle for a 0–0 draw most recently—though, despite the disappointing result, the Reds left a better overall impression against Fulham than the Spurs did against Everton.

Liverpool – Tottenham Head-to-Head Record

When it comes to head-to-head matchups, the most recent results should be taken with a grain of salt; after all, Arne Slot and Igor Tudor were still in charge when the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at Anfield Road in March. Overall, however, the head-to-head record clearly favors Liverpool. The Reds have won seven of their last ten matches against Tottenham (7-1-2) and also prevailed in the 2024–25 League Cup, winning 4–0 in the second leg after a 0–1 loss in the first leg. Tottenham has also been waiting since 2011 for a competitive win at Anfield. Accordingly, the Liverpool vs. Tottenham betting odds are heavily in favor of the hosts.

Liverpool – Tottenham Prediction

The expected rotation—which traditionally comes with the importance of the EFL Cup—could even work in Liverpool’s favor, as Iraola’s style of play thrives on intensity and high effort; fresh legs should therefore help the Reds rather than hurt them, even if the substitutes don’t quite match the quality of the starting lineup.

On top of that, despite a mixed start to the season so far, Liverpool remains undefeated, while Tottenham is still waiting for its first goal after four Premier League matches. That’s why, given the odds of 3.20, it’s certainly worth considering that the Spurs might once again fail to score. Especially in light of their offensive record so far, I believe there’s definitely value here.

For the Liverpool vs. Tottenham pick, I’m sticking with a home win for the Reds in regulation time. Anfield, greater squad depth, a better season record so far, and the clear head-to-head trend all point to Liverpool—despite rotation—while Tottenham has yet to find its rhythm offensively. I’m therefore betting five units on the 1.74 odds for a Liverpool win. Those who want to take a little less risk can alternatively bet on the Match Combo 1X & Under 4.5 goals.
