Will City’s defense falter against the Greeks, too?

It’s a turbulent time for the home team, both on and off the field! However, we’re focusing on the action on the field at the Etihad and offering a prediction for the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens.

The “Cityzens” suffered a bitter 2-4 loss to PSG a week ago and can’t afford another slip-up. However, the Manchester City vs. AEK Athens odds do not reflect the risk of another loss for the British side. No wonder—unlike the star-studded squad from the Seine, City’s task against the Greeks looks significantly easier.

Although the visitors kicked off the current Champions League campaign with a home win against LASK, they most recently suffered a 1-3 loss on the road against Donetsk. We therefore expect a home win for the favorites, but given their currently very shaky defense, we’re predicting that the visiting team from the Acropolis won’t lose by a margin of at least three goals in the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens.

Manchester City vs. AEK Athens AI Prediction

The AI has also analyzed the matchup and clearly identifies the home team as the favorite. For City, our artificial intelligence has calculated an expected goals (xG) value of 3.05—the highest among all matches in the current round. For the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens, the AI prediction therefore calls for more than 2.5 goals for the hosts.

Manchester City – Statistics & Current Form

Manchester got off to a fitting start in the Champions League with a straightforward 2-0 away win in Porto. However, as mentioned earlier, this was followed by a home defeat in the top-of-the-table clash against PSG. The number of goals conceded was particularly painful.

The defending champions from the past two years found the back of the net four times. At the same time, it was the second competitive match in a row in which the defense showed room for improvement.

Similarly, the Premier League clash against Sunderland ended in a victory, but the 5–3 scoreline was also nothing to write home about from a defensive standpoint. In last Saturday’s dress rehearsal against the “Tractor Boys” from Ipswich, they once again failed to keep a clean sheet in a 3–2 home win.

Will both sides find the back of the net again in the match between City and AEK?

Against this backdrop, we believe the odds on both teams scoring in the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens are also worth considering. On offense, Manchester can once again rely on Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian already has four goals in two Champions League matches. With this tally, the former Borussia Dortmund player is tied for first place in the scoring race. Haaland is also impressing in the Premier League: After seven appearances, he comfortably leads the league’s scoring race with eight goals. The hosts’ offense is also reliable from a collective standpoint: Only the “Seagulls” from Brighton have scored more goals in the Premier League.

Due to their simultaneously shaky defense, there’s no shortage of goals in Premier League matches—an average of 3.7 are scored per game. Another characteristic of the hosts in this season’s Champions League is that their offense really kicks into high gear after halftime.

Will Manchester strike twice after halftime?

City has scored all four of its goals in the current competition in the second halves. In the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens, the betting odds on the home team scoring more than one goal after halftime are therefore also worth considering.

AEK Athens – Statistics & Current Form

AEK has gotten off to a strong start to the new season in the domestic Super League. After six matchdays, the team from the capital remains undefeated. The offense, in particular, has been delivering: AEK averages 2.66 goals per game in the Super League—the highest in the league.

In the Champions League, however, the challenges are naturally more difficult. Most recently, they suffered a 1-3 loss on the road against Donetsk. Admittedly, given how evenly matched the game was, the margin of defeat was a bit too wide. On the other hand, their struggles on the road were already evident during the Champions League qualifiers.

In the playoffs, Athens managed only a scoreless draw at Levski Sofia. Even at the national level, it’s clear that the defense is significantly more prone to conceding goals on the road than at home. In their three away league games this season, Athens failed to keep a clean sheet in every match, and all three goals conceded this season came during their away trips.

Vargas and Jovic are expected to lead the charge for AEK’s offense

On offense, AEK is once again relying on its Hungarian-Serbian duo of Barnabás Varga and Luka Jovic. Both forwards have already scored four goals in the domestic league, and Varga, in particular, feels right at home on the international stage. He has already found the net twice in this season’s Champions League.

This tally fits the pattern: In his previous season in the Champions League—the 2025–26 campaign—he scored just as many goals in six appearances for his then-club, Ferencváros Budapest! The visitors also hold a physical advantage. While their opponents were in action last weekend in domestic league play, AEK had the weekend off and was able to rest and recover.

Manchester City – AEK Athens Head-to-Head Record

This will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides. AEK last faced an English opponent in the Europa League group stage in September and November of 2023. Back then, the Greeks took on the “Seagulls” from Brighton and, after a 3–2 away win, suffered a 0–1 loss at home.

Manchester, for its part, hasn’t played against a Greek club in nearly six years. The last time was in November 2020. Back then, City also faced Olympiacos Piraeus on the road during the Champions League group stage.

Against the Greek record champions, Manchester recorded a 1-0 away victory. Three weeks earlier, City also secured a decisive 3-0 home win against Piraeus. For the first-ever matchup between Manchester City and AEK Athens, the betting odds clearly favor a victory for the British side.

Manchester City – AEK Athens Prediction

AEK already played a match in England in the previous round. However, that match was against Donetsk, which played its game against the Athenians at Stamford Bridge as a temporary venue.

Now they’re heading back to England, and for the first time in nearly three years, they’ll face a Premier League opponent once again. With City, they’re up against a true heavyweight from the island. Manchester sits in first place in the Premier League and has scored the most goals in the league after Brighton.

Following their recent defeat against champions PSG, Manchester will now take the field highly focused to secure the three points they’ve firmly planned to earn against the Greeks. However, the hosts have room for improvement on defense: In their last three competitive matches at home, Coach Enzo Maresca’s team has failed to keep a clean sheet.

In fact, Manchester has conceded an average of no fewer than three goals per game! In our view, therefore, the best bet for the match between Manchester City and AEK Athens is that the home team will not win by a margin of at least three goals.
