PSV Eindhoven Counts on Its Home Advantage
The Champions League is finally kicking off! The first matches of the Champions League group stage are on the schedule this week. We’re taking a look at the match between PSV Eindhoven and Shakhtar Donetsk, where a bet on the hosts is rewarded with odds of 1.46 by the popular bookmaker Bwin. Both teams are the current champions of their respective countries and didn’t have to go through the grueling qualification process. A win on the first matchday is the goal for the Dutch side, who are counting on their home-field advantage.
The “Boeren” were the dominant champions of the Eredivisie last season. The Red-Whites crossed the finish line with a 19-point lead over Feyenoord Rotterdam. They put the ball in the back of the net more than 100 times (101 goals) and suffered only four losses (27 wins, 3 draws). We expect the Dutch team to be strong enough to survive the group stage and advance to the knockout round.
Shakhtar was also the team to beat in Ukraine last season. A 12-point lead over Cherkasy secured their 16th national championship title. They suffered only two losses. But how will the Orange-and-Blacks fare in the Champions League? According to bookmakers’ estimates, their run is likely to end after the group stage.
PSV Eindhoven vs. Shakhtar Donetsk AI Prediction
As always, let’s also take a look at our betting AI’s assessment. After completing its simulation, the AI calculates a 64.9 percent probability of victory for the hosts. The AI predicts a 17.8 percent probability of a draw and just 17.3 percent for an away win. Bookmakers predict a home win with a 68.5 percent probability. Therefore, there is no value to be found here.
In terms of goals, the AI expects a total of 3.34 goals, broken down to 2.26 for Eindhoven and 1.08 for the Ukrainians. Therefore, from the AI’s perspective, a bet on a match in which both teams score is the most recommended option.
PSV Eindhoven – Statistics & Current Form
PSV Eindhoven has been the dominant team in the Eredivisie in recent years. They’ve won the national title three times in a row, and this season, too, we see the “Root-Witten” once again with a good chance in the race for the championship.
Internationally, the Dutch side can also point to two major successes: the 1978 UEFA Cup victory and the 1988 European Cup. Reaching at least the knockout stage should be within their reach again this season.
In the league, the hosts are in excellent form. After five matches, the Red-and-Whites have four wins and one draw. With 13 points, the “Boeren” sit in second place behind league leaders Alkmaar, who have won every match so far. They trail by two points.
PSV with a Strong Offense
With 18 goals scored, head coach Peter Bosz’s squad once again boasts the league’s best offense. American player Pepi leads the team in scoring with three goals. The defense has conceded six goals, placing them fifth in that statistic.
In the Eredivisie, PSV is unbeaten in five consecutive home matches spanning two seasons. This home strength should now also secure the first three points in the Champions League, and we are quite optimistic that this goal will be achieved.

Shakhtar Donetsk – Statistics & Current Form
The Ukrainians have won only one international title to date. In 2009, they won the UEFA Cup. This remains the Orange-and-Blacks’ greatest achievement to date. On the domestic front, the visitors have already collected several trophies. Donetsk boasts 16 league titles and 11 cup victories.
In the domestic Premier League, Shakhtar is once again performing very well. In five matches, they’ve earned three points four times and suffered only one defeat. With 12 points to their credit, the Orange-and-Blacks currently sit in second place behind Polissya Zhytomyr, which is tied on points. In last Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash, Donetsk won 2–1 at Lviv.
Donetsk Impressive Defensively
With ten goals, the visitors are averaging two goals per game. This is the third-best average in the Ukrainian league. Brazilian Kaua Elias has already scored three times for his team. Having conceded only four goals so far, Coach Arda Turan’s squad has had to retrieve the ball from their own net less than once per game.
At least in the league, Shakhtar is playing with great confidence. They have won all of their last five away games. However, their most recent international away match ended in a 1–2 loss to Crystal Palace. That defeat knocked them out in the semifinals of last year’s Conference League.

PSV Eindhoven – Shakhtar Donetsk Head-to-Head Record
The two teams have faced each other once so far. That match also took place in the Champions League. In 2024, the Dutch side came back from a 0–2 halftime deficit to win 3–2 on Matchday 5.
After a red card for the visitors, all of PSV’s goals came after the 87th minute. This year, we actually expect a clearer outcome.
PSV Eindhoven vs. Shakhtar Donetsk Prediction
The Ukrainian champions face a difficult task to kick off the group stage. The Dutch hosts are unbeaten in their last five home games and have been exceptionally prolific, scoring 18 goals. We therefore expect a commanding victory for the Red-and-Whites and recommend betting on PSV Eindhoven against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Both teams came through their away matches last weekend and picked up three points. The strengths of both teams certainly lie more on the offensive side. Therefore, we also expect several goals on Thursday evening, making the bet on over 3.5 goals in the PSV Eindhoven vs. Shakhtar Donetsk match—at odds of 2.15—a promising option.
