Will Sweden live up to its status as the clear favorite?
No sooner have the top European leagues picked up steam again than they’re already being slowed down once more. That’s because the first international break of the new season is just around the corner. The Nations League has plenty of exciting matchups in store, such as my Sweden vs. Romania prediction.
As expected, the host and World Cup participant Sweden is considered the clear favorite in this match. Especially on offense, the Tre Kronor boast a top-notch lineup with Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, which is why, in my Sweden vs. Romania prediction, I believe the home team can score a few goals against the underdog.
On the other hand, the Swedish defense is still anything but solid. Graham Potter’s team has hardly kept a clean sheet in recent months. That’s why I also think the Romanian underdogs—who have a decent offensive lineup—are capable of scoring a goal in their away game in Solna.
Sweden – Romania Head-to-Head Record
The two nations have faced each other a total of nine times so far, with Sweden claiming the majority of the wins in this rivalry (4). Romania won three times, and two matches ended in draws. However, the last matchup took place eight years ago. Romania won that match narrowly, 1-0, on home soil.
Of course, that game has little relevance for the upcoming match. Despite the lack of a meaningful recent head-to-head record, betting odds for Sweden vs. Romania favor the hosts this coming Friday.
Sweden – Romania Prediction
Despite failing to win a single match and finishing last in their World Cup qualifying group, Sweden still made it to the last World Cup. How is that possible? By winning their Nations League group, the Scandinavians secured a spot in the World Cup playoffs. There, Sweden showed a different side than they did in the World Cup qualifying group and prevailed against Ukraine and Poland.
At the World Cup itself, Tre Kronor’s weak defense proved to be their undoing. Although they earned a spot in the round of 32 with four points in the group stage, France had little trouble with Graham Potter’s team in their 3-0 victory in that round. Conceding ten goals in four games was simply too many at the highest international level and, in the end, even their own strong offense couldn’t save them.
In their last 15 international matches, the Tre Kronor have not kept a single clean sheet. The last time they managed a clean sheet was in June 2025 against Hungary. However, since the Swedes have usually scored goals in their recent matches themselves, these games have often been high-scoring.
Once again, last summer’s World Cup took place without Romania. The Eastern Europeans haven’t qualified for a World Cup finals tournament since 1998, after the Tricolorii were eliminated by Turkey in the playoff semifinals this time around. In the Nations League, however, they finished first in their group, with the team led by Romanian icon Gheorghe Hagi winning every group match and posting a goal difference of 18–3 by the end.
However, Romania competed only in the so-called League C in the last edition of the Nations League, and their group opponents—Kosovo, Cyprus, and Lithuania—were not among the top-tier teams. Nevertheless, scoring 18 goals is no small feat, which speaks to the team’s offensive quality.
With their promotion to League B, tough challenges now await in the form of Sweden, Bosnia, and Poland, against whom the Tricolorii are considered underdogs. Nevertheless, the Romanians showed in the last World Cup qualifier that they can hold their own against teams like Bosnia or Austria. I consider the strength of the two aforementioned group opponents in the World Cup qualifiers to be roughly comparable to that of their Nations League opener opponent.
While I don’t expect an away win in my Sweden vs. Romania prediction, I do believe the visitors from Eastern Europe are capable of causing some trouble at the Strawberry Arena. In the two international matches since Gheorghe Hagi took over as coach, the Romanians remain undefeated (1-1-0). That’s why I’m betting on both teams to score and on there being more than two goals in the match.
